The New York City Marathon, started in 1970 by Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta, is a major long-distance running event. Initially held only in Central Park, it expanded by 1976 to include all five boroughs of New York City.

Tamirat Tola from Ethiopia won the men's race at the New York City Marathon, setting a new record time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 58 seconds. Kenyan runner Albert Korir finished second and Shura Kitata of Ethiopia took third place.
