A "Comedy of Runs, Hits and Errors"
A crowd of about 7,000 people streamed into Wrigley Field on August 25th, 1922, not knowing that they were about to witness the breaking of a record that would stand for over 100 years.
The Chicago Cubs were decent in 1922, and they had a record of 67-53 heading into the late summer contest.
The Phillies, on the other hand, were putrid, as they had a record of 40-72.
Jimmy Ring was the starting pitcher for the Phillies, and he would be absolutely rocked on that fateful day, as he gave up 12 hits and 6 earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. The team behind him was dreadful, as 10 of the 16 runs given up while Ring was on the mound were unearned.
The Phillies would commit four errors that day. By the end of the fourth inning, the Cubs were up by a laughable score of 25-6.
Charlie Hollocher and Hack Miller of the Cubs did most of the damage for the team, as they both had 6 RBIs that day. Hack Miller went deep twice in the game, with both home runs coming off of Jimmy Ring.
The Cubs took their foot off the accelerator after the fourth inning, benching some of their best players.
To their credit, the Phillies never gave up.
In the eighth and ninth innings of the game, the Phillies put up 14 runs, making the score 26-23. The Cubs, who thought that the game was in the bag, were suddenly scrambling for the victory.
The Phillies played some extremely sloppy baseball in the late innings of the game, committing a total of 5 errors.
In total, nine errors were committed over the course of the game by the two teams.

The Cubs and Phillies combined for 51 hits, 49 runs and nine errors over the course of the game.
Cliff Heathcote, the lead-off hitter for the Cubs, went 5-5 with 4 RBIs and 2 walks, reaching base a total of seven times.
The Phillies unbelievably only used two pitchers in the game, while the Cubs used a total of five.

Surprisingly, the game took just 3 hours and one minute to complete, despite 49 runs being scored.
