Havertz Returns Home - Arsenal's Quadruple on the Line at the Emirates

This is the game Arsenal's season has been building toward - not just a Champions League quarter-final place, but proof that a historic quadruple chase is real. Mikel Arteta's side take on Bayer Leverkusen at a packed Emirates Stadium knowing a win or draw sends them through, but that Leverkusen - fired up after a disputed penalty in the first leg - will arrive in London with genuine belief they can pull off a result that would be historic for their club.

The first leg at the BayArena was a drab affair that Arsenal did not deserve to draw. They had six shots all game, managed just two on target, and were heading for their first Champions League defeat of the season before Noni Madueke won a controversial penalty in the 86th minute and Kai Havertz scored it - against his former club, in front of 30,000 fans who had given him a warm reception when he came off the bench. Leverkusen were furious. Their manager Kasper Hjulmand still insists it was not a penalty. Tuesday's second leg will be played in that context.

What's at Stake: Arsenal are chasing a historic quadruple - Premier League leaders (7 points clear of Manchester City), UCL last 16, League Cup final against Manchester City on 22 March, FA Cup quarter-finals. The Champions League is the one trophy they have never won. Leverkusen advancing to the quarter-finals would be historic - they have never previously won a UCL last-16 tie (0W in their previous 6 attempts before this season).

The first leg at the BayArena was officiated by Halil Meler (Turkey). His penalty award to Arsenal was the defining moment of the first leg and remains disputed by Leverkusen. The second leg official will be announced by UEFA separately in the days before the match. Meler showed 4 yellows in the first leg and let Andrich escape a second booking early on - whoever takes charge, the cards market is worth watching.

Team News

Injuries, Suspensions and Squad Updates

Arsenal have a complicated injury picture. Martin Odegaard - their captain and chief creative force - remains out with a knee issue, with the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City on 22 March his most realistic return target. Mikel Merino is out until late May with a broken foot. Ben White has a knock with no confirmed return date. The good news: William Saliba, Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Gabriel are all fit. Leandro Trossard missed the first leg and remains a doubt. Riccardo Calafiori has returned to training. Bukayo Saka was substituted at 60 minutes in the first leg - Arteta insisted it was tactical, not injury-related.

Bayer Leverkusen were without several key players in the first leg. Mark Flekken (first-choice goalkeeper, knee) remains out. Loic Bade, Arthur and Lucas Vazquez are all still unavailable. Eliesse Ben Seghir was targeting a return this weekend and could be available for the second leg. Nathan Tella (foot) is close. Patrick Schick - their top UCL scorer with 4 goals - came off the bench in the first leg and could start in London. Teenager Christian Kofane started the first leg and impressed despite the result.

Goal Timing Analysis

When Do These Teams Score and Concede?

Arsenal conceded for the first time in the UCL all season in the 46th minute of the first leg - from a Leverkusen corner, of all things. Their UCL defensive record had been spotless before Andrich's header. Leverkusen's UCL goals have been spread across the 90 minutes with no obvious peak, though they were strong from set pieces in the first leg.

Recent Form

Arsenal at Home - Leverkusen Away

Arsenal's home record this season has been exceptional - they have not lost at the Emirates in any competition this campaign and have won all their UCL group phase home games. Their form in 2026 has wobbled slightly in league play (won only 3 of 8 PL games since January), but the Emirates remains a fortress. Leverkusen's away form is more mixed: wins in big games (Olympiacos, Hamburg) alongside losses (Galatasaray) and draws (Freiburg, Slavia, Arsenal).

Players to Watch

Key Individuals on Both Sides

29
Kai Havertz
Forward - Arsenal - Germany
7 G/A Last 6 UCL
The story of both legs. Havertz scored the 89th-minute penalty against his former club in the first leg, in front of fans who had given him a standing ovation as he came on. Now he plays the second leg at his home ground, the Emirates. Seven goal involvements in his last six Champions League games. If Arsenal are going to win this tie comfortably, Havertz scoring again would be the most fitting narrative possible - and the most likely.
14
Viktor Gyokeres
Striker - Arsenal - Sweden
10 PL Goals
Arsenal's leading Premier League scorer with 10 goals and their primary target man. Was replaced in the first leg by Havertz with 16 minutes remaining. At the Emirates with a full house behind him, Gyokeres will be expected to lead the line and create the kind of second-half dominance that the BayArena first leg lacked. His physical presence against a Leverkusen defensive line missing Bade and Artur will be tested.
8
Robert Andrich
Captain/CM - Leverkusen - Germany
Scored 1st Leg
The Leverkusen captain scored the first leg header from a Grimaldo corner - and was arguably lucky to still be on the pitch having received a very early yellow card for pulling down Gyokeres in the opening seconds. He drives everything for Leverkusen in midfield. If Leverkusen are going to cause an upset at the Emirates, Andrich needs to dominate the middle and protect the back line against Rice and Eze.
20
Noni Madueke
Winger - Arsenal - England
Won the Penalty
Came off the bench in the 60th minute and was the most direct, dangerous player on the pitch for Arsenal. Won the penalty that changed the tie. Arteta said his impact was "no surprise." Could start the second leg. If he does, Leverkusen will need to pay close attention to his tendency to drive at defenders and draw fouls in dangerous areas - he is exactly the type of player who gets penalties at the Emirates in front of a home crowd.

Manager Quotes

What the Managers Are Saying

"The game had very different periods. We started well, had a massive chance, hit the crossbar with Martinelli. We had some dominance but didn't finish enough actions. We didn't pay enough attention from the kick-off after half-time and that's when the tie changed. But the character the team showed to find a way to equalise was really important."
Mikel Arteta - Arsenal Head Coach
"For me it's not a penalty. It would have been better with a 1-0 victory but that's how it is. I don't see a penalty there but that's the way it went. Overall a good performance and we will travel to London next week full of hope."

Arsenal Home UCL Record 25-26

The Emirates will be sold out and loud. Arsenal's home record in European football this season is perfect - they won all four home UCL group stage games and have not lost at the Emirates in any competition this campaign. For Leverkusen, this is exactly the kind of intimidating atmosphere their domestic form suggests they may struggle to handle - they have won just 4 of their last 10 Bundesliga games since the winter restart.

Goalscorer Markets

Anytime, First and Last Goalscorer Odds

Bet365 prices, 14 March 2026. Gabriel Jesus and Viktor Gyokeres both sit at 2.00 anytime - that Jesus is priced level with Gyokeres tells you Arteta might rotate the Swede. Havertz at 2.40 is the one I keep coming back to - seven goal involvements in his last six UCL games, he scored the pen in leg one, and he's at home. The narrative practically writes itself. Schick at 4.75 is the Leverkusen play - if he starts and finds a goal early, the whole dynamic shifts.

Sharp Angles
  • Arsenal to win at 1.30 is short but it's logical money. They have not lost at the Emirates in any competition all season, won all 8 UCL group phase games, and are playing a Leverkusen side sitting 6th in the Bundesliga that has won just 4 of 10 since January. The price reflects a genuine favourite at home in a tie they should control. The more interesting angle is Arsenal to win without conceding (No BTTS at 1.70) - Arsenal's UCL defensive record before the first leg corner was pristine.
  • BTTS No at 1.70 is the sharpest value on the board. Arsenal kept clean sheets in all 8 UCL group phase games. Leverkusen managed 1 shot on target per leg in their first leg and are missing multiple first-choice players. Arsenal need to score but do not need to concede - Arteta will set up to be controlled and efficient, not open. A 1-0 or 2-0 Arsenal win is the most likely clean sheet result and the implied probability at 1.70 underprices it.
  • Under 2.5 Goals at 2.20 as an alternative. The first leg had just 2 goals from 16 combined shots. Both managers played cautiously knowing there was a second leg. At the Emirates, Arsenal just need to get the job done - they will not go gung-ho. A 1-0 win is the most likely single scoreline in this match. The under market at 2.20 is worth consideration alongside the BTTS No.
  • Arsenal win / BTTS No at 2.00 is the double that captures the most likely outcome without excessive risk. Arsenal win the match, Leverkusen do not score. Given Leverkusen's attacking limitations in the first leg and their injury issues up front, a clean sheet is realistic. This is the best value combination on the board.
  • Kai Havertz first scorer or anytime scorer - worth checking the specific odds on your platform. Havertz has 7 goal involvements in his last 6 UCL games, is at his home ground, and has enormous personal motivation after scoring against his former club in the first leg. He scored the pen in leg one, at his home ground in leg two. Hard to look past him.
  • Rotation risk for Arsenal - check the Everton result first. Arsenal play Everton at the Emirates on 14 March before this game, and the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City is five days after it on 22 March. Arteta may rest key players against Everton and potentially rotate again here if the scoreline allows it. A rotated XI late in the game could open this up. Watch the team sheet carefully before placing bets.
  • Leverkusen at 9.50 is an interesting speculative market if Schick starts. If Patrick Schick returns to the starting lineup and Leverkusen get an early goal to silence the Emirates, the dynamic of this game can shift rapidly. At 9.50 the value is there for a small speculative position. They were the better team for large periods of the first leg and Hjulmand's anger over the penalty will have them wound up. This is not a gimme for Arsenal.

Sports King Take

Arsenal win at home and advance is the most likely outcome on the card - they are too organised, too experienced and too motivated at the Emirates to let this slip. The price at 1.30 is short but it's earned. The real money is on how it happens. Arsenal win without conceding at 2.00 (BTTS No / Arsenal Win double) is the sharpest single ticket here, underpinned by the best defensive UCL record in the competition before that corner from Grimaldo in the first leg. Leverkusen are a credible opponent who felt hard done by - but they travel to the Emirates without their goalkeeper, without three defenders, and with a striker barely back from injury. The Emirates noise advantage is real. Arsenal win 1-0 or 2-0 is the most likely narrative.
