History:The first-ever men's 20-over Cricket World Cup was held in 2007 in South Africa. The tournament has since grown into a regular fixture on the international calendar, expanding to 20 teams in 2024.
Following the great success of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2007, ICC organized the first-ever Women's T20 World Cup in 2009.
The men's and women's competitions are separate events, with their own schedules, host countries and champions.
2026 Men's Champion:
India are the current champions after winning in 2026. They beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8, 2026.
India scored 255/5 before bowling New Zealand out for 159. Sanju Samson scored 89, while Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets for 15 runs and was named Player of the Match.
The victory gave India a record third men's T20 World Cup title. They also became the first men's team to retain the trophy and the first to win the tournament on home soil.
Past Men's Winners:
India:
India was the winner of the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20, as they won a close contest against Pakistan in the final. To date, they have won the T20 World Cup title three times, in 2007, 2024 and 2026.
England:
England won the 2010 ICC World T20 as they won the one-sided final against Australia. England's campaign had been fuelled by some magnificent performances from the premier batsman Kevin Pietersen. England also won the event in 2022 when they beat Pakistan in the final.
West Indies:
West Indies have won the ICC World T20 tournament twice, in 2012 and 2016. What characterized the West Indies side in those years was the immense belief, largely fuelled by their captain, Darren Sammy. Marlon Samuels was the player of the match in both the tournament finals.
Australia:
Australia won the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. They defeated New Zealand by eight wickets in the final in Dubai, with Mitchell Marsh scoring an unbeaten 77.
Pakistan:
The runners-up from the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 made up for the loss by winning the ICC World T20 2009. They beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at Lord's, with Shahid Afridi scoring an unbeaten 54. Umar Gul was another key contributor, finishing as the tournament's leading wicket-taker.
Sri Lanka:
Sri Lanka won the 2014 tournament, defeating India by six wickets in the final in Bangladesh. Kumar Sangakkara's unbeaten half-century helped secure the title after runners-up finishes in 2009 and 2012.
ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2028:
The next edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup will take place in October and November 2028 in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament will feature 20 teams and 55 matches.
The ICC has approved a revised format for 2028:
- Group stage: Five groups of four teams, with the top two teams in each group advancing.
- Super 10: Two groups of five teams, with each group winner qualifying directly for the semi-finals.
- Eliminators: The second-placed team in each Super 10 group plays the third-placed team from the opposite group. The winners take the remaining semi-final places.
- Knockout stage: Two semi-finals followed by the final.
This replaces the four-group opening stage and Super Eight format used in 2024 and 2026.
Women's T20 World Cup Winners:
The inaugural edition of the Women's T20 World Cup was won by England, who won the title on their home soil in 2009.
Australia's women's side has been the most successful team at the ICC Women's T20 World Cups with seven titles, won in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023 and 2026.
West Indies won the 2016 edition of the tournament. New Zealand won their first title in 2024 by beating South Africa in the final.
2026 Women's Champion:
Australia won the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup, beating England by seven wickets in the final at Lord's on July 5. Beth Mooney scored 64 as Australia chased down England's 150/4 to finish on 153/3.
Pakistan has been awarded hosting rights for the next women's tournament in 2028, with neutral-venue arrangements also applying under the ICC's hosting agreement.
