Mayweather vs Pacquiao Gate To Set Record By Over $50 Million
Published on March 28th, 2015 12:18 am ESTEverybody knows that the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, which is being billed as the fight of the century, is going to do big numbers.
After all, this fight has been the magical unicorn of the boxing world for five years. Nobody ever thought that the fight would ever get made, but in the end, money ended up winning out and the two fighters finally put their signatures on the dotted line.
The PPV numbers for Mayweather vs Pacquiao are expected to be staggering - some estimates have upwards of 3 million buys for the fight, which would generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues.
The most staggering number, however, might be the live gate (ticket sales) that is expected to be generated. Mayweather/Pacquiao is going to have a gaggle of celebrities sitting ringside, and these celebrities are likely going to have to shell out upwards of six figures in order to obtain these seats.
Earlier this week, promoter Bob Arum said that the MGM (host of the fight) has been configured for the fight and that there is an expectation of a gate of $74 million.
That means that the tens of thousands of people in the building for Mayweather/Pacquiao will combine for a total of $74 million in ticket sales. Assuming a total capacity of 20,000 people, this means that the average ticket for the fight will cost $3,700. That includes the ringside seats and the nosebleeds at the top of the stadium.
It should be noted that the previous record for largest ever gate belonged to Mayweather/Canelo, which ended up generating just over $20 million in ticket sales. This means that Pacquiao/Mayweather will end up more than TRIPLING that number.

In addition to the live gate and PPV numbers, the city of Las Vegas will also enjoy enormous benefits from the fight taking place. Many people will be flying in from out of town to catch the fight, which will result in higher hotel and food revenues. As a matter of fact, hotel bookings in Las Vegas soared in the minutes following the official announcement of Pacquiao/Mayweather.
All told, some estimates have the fight generating upwards of $500 million in DIRECT revenues. After seeing these numbers, it should come as no surprise that Mayweather is going to be receiving north of $100 million for the fight.
