In photo: Robin Yount - The 1987 Milwaukee Brewers won thirteen straight games to open their season. There are three times in the modern era who have won thirteen straight games to start the regular season. They are:

2023 Tampa Bay Rays
1982 Atlanta Braves
1987 Milwaukee Brewers

The 1987 Milwaukee Brewers had a very good team heading into the 1987 season, with a line-up that included the likes of Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and B.J. Surhoff.

The Brewers were considered to be a solid club that would likely miss the playoffs, so imagine the league's surprise when the Brewers rattled off 13 straight wins to start the season.

The Brewers started their season off with a home sweep of the Boston Red Sox, and then went on the road and swept the Texas Rangers. The road trip continued with a visit to the Baltimore Orioles, with the Brewers sweeping them over the course of a three-game series as well.

The Brewers headed back home, where they swept the Texas Rangers yet again to give themselves a perfect record of 12-0.

The Brewers travelled to Chicago, where they took on the White Sox in a two-game series. If the Brewers won both of these games, they would clinch the record for most wins to start a season.

After winning the first game 5-4 and giving themselves a share of the record, the Brewers lost 7-1 in Game #2. Instead of breaking the record, the Brewers would now share it with the 1982 Atlanta Braves.

Most teams would suffer from a bit of a letdown at this point, but the Brewers kept winning. In fact, by April 27th, 1987, the Brewers had a record of 17-1 and were way out in front in the AL East.

May would be a complete disaster for the Brewers - by May 29th, the Brewers were barely over .500, sporting a record of 22-21. May included two long losing streaks of eight and six games.

To their credit, the Brewers pulled things back together and finished the regular season with a very respectable record of 91-71. Unfortunately for the Brewers, their May stumble would cost them the playoffs, as they would finish 7 games back of the Detroit Tigers in the AL East division.
