A Trixie is a popular bet type made up of 4 bets across 3 selections: 3 doubles and 1 treble. Unlike a straight treble where all three picks must win for a return, a Trixie gives you a safety net - you only need two of your three selections to land to get a payout. What is a Trixie Bet?

A Trixie bet is a full cover multiple on 3 selections, made up of 4 separate bets: 3 doubles and 1 treble. The name has roots in traditional British betting terminology and it's one of the most widely used multiple bet types, particularly in horse racing and football. Because a Trixie doesn't include singles, your unit stake is multiplied by 4 - so a $10 Trixie costs $40 in total. The 4 bets in a Trixie on selections A, B and C break down as follows: Double 1 covers A and B, Double 2 covers A and C, Double 3 covers B and C, and the Treble covers all three. If all three selections win, all four bets pay out. If only two selections win, just the one double that covers those two winners returns. If one or zero selections win, the entire Trixie loses.

Trixie vs. Patent - What's the Difference?

A Patent bet also covers 3 selections but adds 3 singles to the mix - making it 7 bets in total rather than 4. The key advantage of a Patent is that you get a return even if only one selection wins. The trade-off is a higher total outlay. If you're confident that at least two of your three picks will land, a Trixie offers better value since you're not paying for singles you don't need. If you want the extra insurance of a return from a single winner, the Patent is the safer route.

When to Use a Trixie Bet

Trixies work best when you have three selections you feel strongly about but don't want to stake everything on a treble, where one loser wipes out the entire bet. Horse racing is the most natural fit - if you've picked three runners across different races, a Trixie lets you profit from any two landing while still collecting a bigger treble return if all three come in. They're also a popular choice for football bettors who want some protection against a single upset derailing a multi-leg bet.

How Much Can You Win on a Trixie?

Your return depends on the odds of each selection and how many win. With all three winners you collect on three doubles plus the treble, which can produce a strong return relative to your outlay. With just two winners you collect only the one relevant double, which may or may not cover the full cost of the Trixie depending on the odds - at shorter prices, that single double might not be enough to show a profit. The calculator above works all of this out for you automatically, showing the return and profit on each individual bet.
