Harry Kane - English Premier League's New Star

Harry Kane - Tottenham Hotspur - Jersey Number 18 and Team LogoA few months back Tottenham Hottspur hardly looked like a club who would be any near the top four of the Premier League. But after Saturday's humbling of Arsenal at White Hart Lane they are within sniffing distance of doing so. This is primarily because of the outstanding performance of a 21-year old Englishman named Harry Kane.

Harry Kane's brace in Spurs' 2-1 win against Arsenal is simply a continuation of his great goal-scoring form. In his last 14 appearances, he has scored as many as 11 goals and his goals against Arsenal took his total tally for this season to 22.

It's ironical considering Kane began playing in his school days for the junior side of Arsenal. The young footballer's penchant for scoring was seen early on in 2010 when he netted twice for the England Under-19 side in a 6-1 win over Albania. His prolific run continued right upto 2013 when he debuted for the English Under-21 side. He signed off with a hattrick against San Marino in a Euro qualification match following it up with a double strike against France bringing his tally to 13 goals from 12 matches in this age category.

He won the Millwall Young Player of the Season 2011-12. He played 22 games for the B-division club that season in which he scored 7 times and made 5 assists. By 2012 Kane found himself playing for Tottenham in the English Premier League. Although the 2012-13 season went by uneventfully with him featuring in only one match, 2013-14 saw him play a more active role for the Spurs. He figured in 10 games and scored thrice. But 2014-15 was when glory beckoned. Kane is now the most important component of Tottenham's starting eleven. Apart from scoring in wins over Aston Villa and Hull City, Kane showed that he was a man for big occasions when scored twice in a famous 5-3 EPL win over Chelsea on New Years day. On February 2, Tottenham signed a 5-year contract with the mercurial striker. Kane lost no time in proving his worth by putting in one of the best performances this season against Arsenal. Apart from the two goals he scored, he could have added a third to his name when he tested goal-keeper Ospina in the fifth minute with a stinging shot. After that, his game was marked with such aggression that one lost count of the runs he made into the Arsenal box. His leap over Koscielny to loop in a header and the winning goal over the hapless Ospina into the corner of the net was an absolute peach.

The right wing forward has already featured in 20 Premier League matches for his side this season and scored on 12 occasions.

Tottenham may be blessed with the industriousness of Ryan Mason, Mousa Dembele and Nabil Bentaleb in the midfield or the blistering pace of Kyle Walker on the right flank, but without Kane they would be far from a winning combination. The young Englishman is the one who lends the final and finishing touch. Tottenham are currently in the fifth place in the EPL with 43 points, one ahead of Arsenal. The spotlight in the Premier League now seems to be shifting slowly from the likes of Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguerro to Harry Kane.

An interesting trivia about Kane is that he could very well have been playing for the Republic of Ireland, his father being Irish born. But that possibility looks very remote now, as it seems like ENGLAND calling for the talismanic Tottenham striker.
