In one of their first seasons in the NHL, the San Jose Sharks set a record that will never be broken due to the change in NHL rules.
Over the course of their 84 game season, the Sharks tied just 2 games, which is the lowest total in a NHL season of at least 70 games.
Over the course of the season, the Sharks finished with a record of 11-71-2.

In order to contend for the fewest ties in a season, a team must either be really, really good, or really, really bad.
In order to contend for the fewest ties in a season, a team must either dramatically outscore their opponents, or get dramatically outscored.
The latter was the case for the 1992-93 San Jose Sharks, as they posted a truly miserable record.
Over the course of the season, the Sharks scored just 218 goals, while allowing 414.
This meant that the team allowed nearly 5 goals per game, which made it nearly impossible for the team to post many ties over the course of a season.

Three teams - the 1985-86 New Jersey Devils, the 1986-87 Calgary Flames and the 1993-94 Vancouver Canucks - posted three ties over the course of a full season.

In this day and age, the tie no longer exists, as the shootout guarantees that there will be a winner and a loser.
This means that the San Jose Sharks record for fewest ties will stand forever, unless there is a change in the rules once again.
