The San Francisco 49ers were one of the NFL's greatest dynasties, led by the likes of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.
The 49ers dynasty also established one of the most unbreakable records in the history of the NFL - the 18-game road winning streak.
That's right - between 1988 and 1990, the 49ers won a shocking 18 road games in a row.
This is a record that couldn't be beaten even by the New England Patriots.
In fact, since the 49ers established the record, the closest that any other team has come is winning 14 road games in a row.
-
The incredible 49ers streak started on Sunday, November 27th, 1988, when they defeated the San Diego Chargers on the road by a score of 48-10.
This was one of the team's breakthrough games, as they had been struggling up until that point.
After that, the 49ers would lose only one more game (at home) that season, as they would end up beating the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl.
-
In 1989, the 49ers would finish 14-2 en route to a very easy Super Bowl victory against the Denver Broncos.
The pressure of playing on the road never got to the 49ers, as they went a perfect 8-0 on the road in 1989, bringing their road winning streak up to 10 games.
The 49ers started the season on the road for three straight games, and they ended up winning all three games.
-
For the second straight year, the 49ers would finish the season 14-2, and for the second straight year, the 49ers would win all of their road games.
There were some close calls for the 49ers, as they narrowly beat the Bengals in overtime in Week 14, though they never lost.
At the end of the 1990 regular season, the 49ers had an impressive 18-game winning streak on the road.
-
In the first week of the 1991 regular season, the 49ers would lose to the New York Giants by a score of 16-14, snapping their impressive streak.
