The 2011 Oakland Raiders: Most Penalized Team in NFL History. Undisciplined. Sloppy. Poorly coached.

If you own the record for most penalty minutes committed in a single season, odds are that all three of these statements will apply to you.

In 2011, the Oakland Raiders committed an atrocious 163 penalties, setting the league record which still stands to this day.

The Raiders, who were coached by Hue Jackson, self-destructed as the season went on.

The biggest reason? Penalties.

The Raiders were over-achieving after their first 11 games of the season, as they had a record of 7-4-0 despite not being overly talented.

The Raiders, however, would lose four of their last five games of the year, sending them to a record of 8-8 and out of the playoffs.

This was deeply disappointing given their start to the season, but the wounds were self-inflicted.

The Raiders committed a total of 163 penalties, which accounted for a total of 1,358 yards.

In addition, 32 of the penalties resulted in first downs for their opponents, many of which came during crucial junctures of the game.

The list of the five most penalized teams of all time looks like this:

2011 Oakland Raiders - 163 penalties
1998 Kansas City Chiefs - 158 penalties
1996 Oakland Raiders - 156 penalties
1994 Oakland Raiders - 156 penalties
1989 Houston Oilers - 149 penalties

The Raiders, in fact, find themselves appearing in the top 10 a total of 7 times - a most embarrassing record, to be sure.
