Late Broncos Interception Costs Las Vegas Sports Books Millions

The Denver Broncos were 7 1/2 point favourites to beat the New York Jets on the road yesterday.

The vast majority of the betting public decided that this was too good to pass up as a reported 95% of the public put their money on the Broncos to cover. In the world of sports betting, this is a big deal as it leaves the books open to either massive gains or massive losses. The books set lines so that they will ideally get 50% bet on either side, and getting 95% of the bets on one team is quite an unprecedented event.

Things were looking good for the Las Vegas sports books as Denver was up by 7 points with just thirty seconds left in the game. Geno Smith, however, had other ideas as he threw an interception to Aqib Talib. Talib took the interception back 22 yards and the Broncos won the game. This resulted in the Broncos covering (they won by 14 points) and the sports books had to pay out millions of dollars in bets. Floyd Mayweather was one of those people as he reportedly took home $600,000 after betting on the Broncos to cover.

In addition, Arizona also took back a late interception for a touchdown which resulted in them covering the spread as well. Again, this resulted in another loss being suffered by the Las Vegas sports books.

Don't feel too bad for the sports books, however, as they reportedly made all of their losses back and more after Dallas defeated Seattle while the Chargers didn't cover against the Raiders.

Just another Sunday in Las Vegas.
