Drawing of Patrick Mahomes, the football player. Was a high school star. Patrick Mahomes put up some incredible numbers during his high school career at Whitehouse High School.

The funny thing about Mahomes is that he spent his Sophomore year at Whitehouse as the team's starting safety, though he was also the team's backup quarterback as well.

If you look up Mahomes' high school stats, you will see that his Sophomore year includes mostly defensive statistics (33 solo tackles).

Did his time spent playing safety in high school help Mahomes to read defenses?

-

In his junior year at Whitehouse, Mahomes was named the team's starting quarterback, and he immediately made a massive impact.

In 12 games, Mahomes passed for 3,839 yards, which worked out to nearly 320 yards of passing per game.

Mahomes threw for 46 touchdowns and posted just 9 interceptions.

In addition, Mahomes added 258 yards on the ground, along with 6 rushing touchdowns.

-

In his senior year at Whitehouse, Mahomes really put up some dazzling numbers, as opposing teams had major issues dealing with Mahomes' cannon of an arm and mobility.

Mahomes' senior year numbers looked like this:

13 games

287-495
4,619 passing yards
355.3 passing yards/game

50 passing touchdowns
6 Interceptions

157 carries for 940 rushing yards
15 rushing touchdowns

-

In total, Mahomes was responsible for 65 touchdowns in his senior year of high school, as his combination of arm strength and mobility made him nearly impossible to defend.

Despite putting up these numbers, Mahomes wasn't as heavily recruited out of high school as some of the other quarterbacks his age, though he did draw a fair amount of attention from local schools.

Mahomes would end up attending Texas Tech, and the rest is history.
