Sports Nicknames - Dan the Man, Danny

Daniel Constantine Marino, Jr. was a legendary American quarterback who played for the Miami Dolphins for his entire professional career of 17 years.

'Dan the Man' as he was called by fans and media because of his golden arm and humility, never won the Superbowl, but is regardless considered as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

His lightning-fast release of the ball is the main reason why Dan Marino still holds several NFL records and was the league passing champ five times.

During his college years, Marino played for Pittsburgh Panthers and was the First-team All-American in year 1981. Once he joined the NFL, he was the first ever rookie to start the Pro Bowl. He was chosen to play in the Pro Bowl a total of nine times. In his second professional season 'Danny', as he was also called, won the leaguve MVP award.

At the end of the career, as a thank you for carrying the franchise on his shoulders for all those years, Miami Dolphins retired his number 13.

In 2005 he was inducted into the Pro Football hall of Fame.
