In the past, UEFA Europa League included 48 teams. However, that made it a very saturated competition that was tough to manage in a short window. Following careful consideration, UEFA Europa League was reduced from 48 teams to 32 teams. To accommodate the rest of the European Teams, UEFA announced a new UEFA Europa Conference League with 32 teams playing in the group stage of the Conference League. The UEFA Europa Conference league was given the status of the third tier of European Football, with the first and second tiers being UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

UEFA had been considering the possibility of a third tier of European Football since 2015, with the idea of giving the lower-ranked teams better exposure and a chance to compete at the established level. In 2018, UEFA announced the Europa League-2 as part of its 2021-24 cycle.

UEFA announced that the move was made to give more and more matches to the clubs and associations. The official name of the competition, 'The UEFA Europa Conference League,' was revealed in September 2019.

In May 2021, UEFA announced the brand identity and competition's official trophy.

Qualification:

The first qualifying round of the competition invites 72 different teams from lower-ranked associations. The second round of competition involves 20 relegated teams from the Champions League. These include 17 relegated teams from the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and 3 eliminated teams from the preliminary round. In addition to these 20 teams, 90 other teams join the 36 winners of the first qualifying round in the non-champions category. This is followed by a third qualifying round in which 10 champion teams from the second qualifying round and 45 non-champion teams join 7 other teams from associations.

A playoff round follows the third qualifying round. The 22 winners of the playoff round qualify for the group stages of the Champions League. These 22 teams are joined by the 10 teams that are eliminated from the Europa League Playoff round.

These teams are divided into 8 groups of four teams, each like the Europa League, and progress to a preliminary knockout round and a knockout round. This is followed by the traditional quarterfinals, semi-finals, and the ultimate final.

Winner of the Inaugural Edition:

The Inaugural final was contested between the Italian football club Roma and the Dutch football club Feyenoord. It was a closely contested final, in which Roma emerged victorious with a narrow margin of 1-0.

With that, Roma became the first team in European football history to win the third tier of European football, the UEFA Conference League.

The winners of the Conference League automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
