Sofia Open is the annual Men's ATP World Tour 250 Series event played in Bulgaria. The tournament is annually played in the later part of the year at the Arena Armeec in Sofia.

Unlike the other premier tennis tournaments, the Sofia Open is named after the host city, Sofia. Since its inception, it has continued with the name tag of Sofia Open. Garanti Koza was the general sponsor for the initial event.


Format and Draw:

The tournament generally lasts about the length of a week and features competition in both Singles and Doubles Categories. Until now, the tournament has featured 28 players in the singles category while 16 teams in the doubles category.


History and Foundation:

Sofia Open Tennis Tournament started as an ATP 250 Series on the ATP World Tour in 2016. At first, the agreement was only for three years. However, the agreement was extended later, and now the tournament gears up to host its seventh consecutive season.

It was one of the few tennis tournaments to go ahead as per schedule, even during the covid-19 restrictions.


Courts and Surfaces:

Over the years, the tournament has been played on hard indoor courts. The surface used between 2016 and 2019 was made of Proflex, while since 2020, the event has featured Acrylic Surfaces on Wood.


2022 Winner:

Swiss tennis player Marc-Andrea Husler is the most recent winner of the event. He beat Holger Rune in the final in two sets.


Past Champions:

The inaugural edition of the Sofia Open was won by Spanish Tennis Professional Roberto Bautista, who managed to edge out Viktor Troicki in the final. Serbian tennis player Viktor Troicki played in the final of the 2017 edition and managed to win. Interestingly, that triumph came in the doubles category as he paired up with his fellow countryman Nenad Zimonjic for the event.


Big Names:

Among prominent names, the Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov and former world number 1, Daniil Medvedev, have won the Sofia Open titles. They won the 2017 and 2019 editions, respectively.

In the doubles category, the inaugural edition was won by the Dutch pair of Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop. Two years later, Matwe Middelkoop won the title again, but this time with Robin Haase as his teammate in the doubles.


Most Titles:

Jannik Sinner, the Italian Tennis professional, holds the record for winning the most titles (2) in the history of the Sofia Open. He managed to win two consecutive titles in the past two seasons and is the current reigning champion of the Sofia Open.
