Sports Nicknames - Stevie G

Steven Gerrard is a name that plays with the heart strings of many English and Liverpool fans. The midfielder played for Liverpool for 17 seasons, with his only season away being the one he spent in the United States before retirement. In that time he managed to lift one of the most prestigious trophies in football; the UEFA Champions League.

The man who would go on to be nicknamed "Stevie G" by fans was born and raised in Liverpool, making his first team debut with the Reds in 1998 at the age of 18. He was soon starting regularly alongside captain Jamie Redknapp in midfield and making rapid strides with the team. By 2003, he was club captain and had won 4 different cup competitions.

It wasn't until 2005, however, that his biggest success came. While Liverpool were left behind domestically, Gerrard led his team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League final against AC Milan. However, this would be his last major success with the club. They came close to winning the title in 2013-14, but Gerrard slipped, allowing Demba Ba to score a goal in a defeat that would lead to Liverpool finishing 2nd.

This would lead to Gerrard leaving the club 2 seasons later for America, playing for L.A. Galaxy in a mediocre season. Gerrard's England career didn't fare much better. Despite much personal success, he was part of the "Golden Generation" that never won anything.

Stevie G is now manager of Glasgow Rangers in Scotland, having secured their first league title in a decade. It is yet to be seen whether or not he can acquire more trophies as a manager than he did as a player. However many he does acquire, however, he will always go down as a legend at Anfield thanks to his loyalty, leadership and goal-scoring ability.
