Sports Nicknames - Pele in Skirts

Marta Vieira da Silva (Marta) is one of the most successful female footballers ever, especially for those not from the United States. She has the most international goals for any Brazilian (male or female) and was the first footballer to score at 5 World Cups. She has been so successful for so long, that the legendary Pele even gave her the nickname "Pele in skirts".

While Marta has been a staple of the Brazilian national side since the age of 16, she has never stayed with a club team for very long. The longest stint was her most successful at Umea IK, where she would score 111 goals in 103 appearances. She left the Swedish club in 2008, playing for 8 different clubs including her present club of Orlando Pride.

Marta's trophy haul is one of the most impressive ever seen in the women's game (if not the most impressive outright). She has won 9 league championships across her time in the United States and Sweden, as well as 2 continental competitions in Europe and Brazil (UEFA Cup and Copa Libertadores). Of course, she then had her success with the national team, winning 2 Pan American Games (2003, 2007) and 3 Sudamericano Femenino competitions (2003, 2010, 2018). All of this is without even mentioning her 6 FIFA World Player of the Year awards, her various Golden Boots and other individual awards that could fill an entire building.

Marta will undoubtedly go down as one of the best female players of all time, having broken so many records (for men and women) and been so prolific. If you're earning nicknames from Pele, you're doing something right.
