A few years back, one of the more fascinating hobby finds emerged north of the border. A single, unopened case of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey card boxes surfaced in Canada. The set, of course, features Wayne Gretzky's rookie card, one of the most iconic and valuable pieces of cardboard in the entire hobby.

The case contained sixteen sealed boxes. For context, a single box of 1979-80 OPC can bring six figures. A full case? The numbers were staggering. Auction estimates pegged the lot in the multi-million-dollar range. Collectors and investors alike circled the sale, knowing the Gretzky rookie potential was essentially a vault of lottery tickets.

The lot eventually went to auction at Heritage. The final hammer price, including the buyer's premium, landed at $3.72 million (USD). A winning bidder emerged, only to have the story take an unexpected twist. The buyer tried to back out, citing concerns and cold feet - though sources later claimed the winner never paid the winning amount. That created chaos. The auction house had a public mess on its hands, with a marquee item suddenly tainted by controversy.

The sealed nature of the cards was the big selling point. Every box represented the possibility of pristine, pack-fresh Gretzky rookies that could grade out as PSA 10s. Even with the drama, the case remains one of the great finds of the modern card era. A full case of 1979-80 OPC in original factory seal is unheard of. Every unopened box is essentially a treasure chest of Gretzky rookie potential. At the peak of the market, the unopened product was being valued in the tens of millions collectively.
