Luka Modric is eying a move to Inter Milan after an epic spell at Real Madrid. Year is 2018. Luka Modric has asked Real Madrid to let him go, after the Croatian midfielder was offered a 4-year contract with an annual salary of €10 million per year by Inter Milan. Transfer would cost the Italian giants €40 million as Modric would initially come on a €15 million loan and would be bought off in the subsequent year for €25 million, all for the purpose of Inter not breaking the financial fair-play rules.

The deal is additionally sweetened by an option given to Modric to sign a two-year deal with Chinese FC Jiangsu upon the expiration of his contract with the Italian giants. The two teams are both owned by Suning Holdings Group from China, which bought a 68,55% stake in Inter in 2016 for a reported €270 million.

The Italian team is returning to international stage this year after years of poor results, ongoing ownership struggles and number of personnel changes, especially at the coaching position. Luciano Spalletti, their fifth coach since 2016 has managed to bring stability to the team and qualify them for Champions League for the first time in six years, by winning their final round match of the last season, 3-2 away to Lazio.

The qualification for the Champions League has made them active in the transfer market this year with notable arrivals of forwards Radja Nainggolan from Roma for €38 million and Lautaro Martinez from Racing Club of Argentina for €16 million. Other notable arrivals include Croatian international Sime Vrsaljko from Athletico Madrid, Stefan de Vrij from Lazio and Kwadwo Asamoah from Juventus.

Real Madrid have previously said that the buy-out clause for Modric is €750 million, well beyond what was offered by Inter Milan, however the same clause for Ronaldo was €1 billion and he was let go in the end for €117 million.

Inter Milan will likely have to increase its offer for Modric for Real to really be able to close this deal, but Modric appears to want this to happen and has reportedly been talking to the Real Madrid front office to honour his wish to change the club.

Modric has played 257 matches for Real Madrid and has recorded 13 goals and 40 assists. Ha arrived to Spain from Tottenham for €30 million in 2012 for the same annual salary that is now offered to him by the Italian club, €10 million per year.
