FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 - Tournament Structure and Schedule

FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 - Brasil - LogoThe 9th edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which is held as a prelude to the FIFA World Cup, is held in Brazi from June 15th - June 30th of this year and it will feature eight nations from six football confederations.

The six current confederation title holders are joined by the World Cup winners and the host nation to form a tournament of eight. The upcoming FIFA World Cup host nation is also the host for the Confederations Cup.

The tournament will be held across six venues in six host cities in Brazil and the final game will be played on June 30th at Estádio do Maracană in Rio de Janeiro.

The eight teams are divided in two groups of four and every team gets to play against the other three teams in the group once. The two top teams from each group advance to the semi-finals and the winners of those get to play in the final. There is also a match played for third place.

This is what the groups look like:

Group A
Brazil
Japan
Mexico
Italy

Group B
Spain
Uruguay

Nigeria

Europe and South America are represented by two teams each because Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Brazil is the tournament host. As Spain won the 2012 European Cup as well, Italy, the runners up, get to play.

The official match ball for the tournament is named 'Cafusa' and is supplied by Adidas.

The Goal-line technology will be used for the first time in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and it will be interesting to see it in action.
