The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is responsible for promoting and supporting the sport in the region. It not only organizes all the major football events in Europe, but also works for the growth of support and well-being of young talent. UEFA youth league was one such initiative that was started to support the raw talent coming from various streams and allow them a chance and opportunity to express themselves at the highest level.

The beginning of the youth-level matches under UEFA's supervision dates back to 2010 when UEFA organized its special UEFA Under-18 Challenge between the age group sides of the German football club Bayern Munich and Italian football club Inter Milan. The match was organized three days before the all-important UEFA Champions League final to attract as much engagement as possible. It was part of the events involving UEFA Grassroots Day.

This match inspired the UEFA youth league as UEFA organized the first-ever edition of the Youth League in 2013. Youth teams from all the clubs in that year's UEFA champions league were invited to the youth league with the same group formation as the Champions League.

Barcelona's youth team was the winner of the Inaugural Edition of the UEFA youth league.

Format:

The format for the youth league was the same as the Champions League, with one difference that the knockout phase included only single-legged ties.

However, the league was expanded to 64 teams in 2015-16. An additional double-legged round of 32 was introduced between the runners-up teams from the group stage and the domestic champion teams of the top 32 UEFA associations on the basis of the UEFA coefficient.

The winners of the group stage progress to the round of 16 while the runners-up play the play-off in the round of 32. The winning teams of this round of 32 progress to the round of 16 and compete against the 8 group winner teams.

From the round of 16 onwards, the single-legged format is continued.
