An extremely important La Liga match will be taking place later today when Real Madrid does battle with Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid enters this contest in 4th place with a record of 4-2-0, though they could vault into 1st place in the league with a victory. With Lionel Messi currently out of the line-up for Barcelona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid need to bank as many points as possible. Depending on what happens in the Villarreal/Levante game later today, Real Madrid could find themselves at the top of the table, depending on what happens in their clash with Atletico Madrid today.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, currently has a record of 4-0-2, which is good for 12 points and fifth place in the table. A win for Atletico Madrid would send them past Real Madrid and into a tie with Barcelona in the table, so they are obviously hoping to put on a strong performance in front of their home fans today.

According to the oddsmakers, Real Madrid has the slight edge to win today, as evidenced by these odds:

Atletico Madrid, 3.20
Draw, 3.10
Real Madrid, 2.45

All three results are worse than even money to take place, though the Real Madrid wins side is the slight betting favourite.

There is going to be a tremendous amount of firepower on display today, as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez will all be suiting up for Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, will be relying on the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres to notch tallies.

Real Madrid is coming off of a successful Champions League contest against Malmo last week, so they will obviously be hoping to put together another big win on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, will be doing their best to score the mild upset at home.
