Argentina Favourites To Win Over Switzerland

Argentina, currently one of the favourites to win the 2014 World Cup, will be squaring off against Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Argentina finished Group F with a perfect 3-0-0 record, though their performances were slightly underwhelming. It was expected that Argentina, led by superstar Lionel Messi, were going to wallop the likes of Iran, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Nigeria, but in the end all three ended up being fairly close contests. Argentina ended up scoring six goals while allowing three, which is hardly the type of dominant performance that people were expecting. In the end, however, Argentina emerged from the group unbeaten.

Switzerland, on the other hand, finished Group E with the second best record behind France. Switzerland finished with a record of 2-0-1, easily outpacing the sides from Ecuador and Honduras for the second spot in the group. Defense was an issue for Switzerland in the Group stage, as they allowed six goals over three games.

Argentina will be relying heavily on Lionel Messi in the knockout stage. Messi was nearly unstoppable over the first three games of the tournament, notching four goals, most of which came in spectacular fashion.

In order to have a chance of winning, Switzerland is going to have to neutralize Messi, but that will be easier said than done.
