Sports Nicknames - The Octopus, Silent Conductor, Busi



Sergio Busquets is one of the greatest Spanish players of all time, whose instrumental performances at the club and national level put him in the list of all-time greats. Busquets is one of the few one-club men in modern day football who started his career at Barcelona and has been an integral part of the side since then.

Start to the Career:

Busquets' association with Barcelona started in 2008 when he got a promotion from the Barcelona B side to the main lineup. Prior to that, Busquets played for Badia, Barbera Andalucia, Lleida, and Jabac Terrassa in his youth career.


Nicknames:

The Octopus:

Busquets got the nickname, "The Octopus" because of his playing ability and incredible skillset. He is one of the greatest playmakers of all time who can move around anywhere in the field and govern the pace of the game. He is not the fastest player in the Barcelona line up. However, he is pretty much everywhere. That's the reason why he is called the octopus. It seems like he has Eight arms like an octopus and can manipulate the game accordingly.

The nickname Octopus had first been used by media persons. Considering the accuracy of the nickname, the fans and supporters around the world soon adopted the tag.

The Octopus has captained both the Spanish National Team and the Barcelona Side.


The Silent Conductor:

Another nickname that Busquets has had is "The Silent Conductor." He has been called "The Silent Conductor" in various journalistic articles.

The reason behind the tag is not exactly known. However, one can guess that its his attitude and effectiveness on the field serve as the basis for his nickname. Busquets is a lethal presence on the pitch. He has his own subtle ways that work wonderfully well for him.

This ability to conduct the momentum in an unnoticeable manner is what makes him one of the finest playmakers of all time.


Achievements:

Busquets has been central to Barcelona's core squad. He is among the few players who have won the treble of La Liga, Copa Del Rey, and UEFA Champions League twice. The first treble came in 2008-09. He followed it up with a treble in 2014-15.

Another major achievement of Busquets career was the World Cup win at the FIFA World Cup 2010. He was crucial to the side's combination. Later, he helped Spain in winning the UEFA European Championship in 2012.

He was also part of the squads that finished as Runners up in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the UEFA Nations League in 2020-21.

Early on in his career, He was the La Liga's breakthrough player in 2009. He was also part of the FIFA World Cup 2010's all star team.

Till now, Busquets has won 8 La Liga titles with Barcelona in 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, and 2018-19. His trophy cabinet also features 7 Copa Del Rey titles and three UEFA Super Cup trophies.

Moreover, he has been crucial to Barcelona's three FIFA Club World Cup titles.
