Sports Nicknames - The African King, The Drog

Didier Drogba is undoubtedly one of the best football players that came from the African continent.

Drogba started his career at Le Mans in France, continued at Guingamp and signed his first big profile contract with Marseille in 2003. In the summer of 2004 he joined Chelsea FC for a club record fee. It is in London where Didier established himself as one of the best strikers in world football.

He was the perfect target man - the focal point of the attack. Physically powerful, accurate with strikes and excellent in the air, Didier Drogba was dominating defenders week after week. He was known as the big game player, always rising to the occasion. One stat that testifies to that is that during his club career he played in ten different finals, in which he scored ten goals and lifted ten trophies.

For his home country of Ivory Coast he played from 2002 until his retirement.

On the back of his shirt he wore the number 11 for most of his career.

Didier Drogba was deservingly nicknamed 'The African King' by the media and fans and also went by 'The Drog'.
