Sports Nicknames - Money

Floyd Mayweather is one of the most attractive names in boxing. His fights garner millions of views and consistently bring in some of the greatest amounts of money in the sport of boxing. On account of this large amount of money-gathering that he has done, Mayweather has picked up the nickname "Money".

Mayweather burst onto the professional scene by winning the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics in the featherweight class. Mayweather continued in this featherweight class until 2001, when he moved up to the lightweight class. Through this period, he remained undefeated in all his bouts.

In fact, such invulnerability is a staple of Mayweather's career. He has fought 50 fights and won all 50, with 27 of those being wins by knockouts. The only loss is that initial loss to Serafim Todorov of Bulgaria in the Olympics. Even then, the US national team challenged the results and claimed that "The judging was totally incompetent".

Two of the most famous matches that Mayweather was involved in came in 2015 and 2017, after two different retirements. The former came against Manny Pacquiao, a match that was extremely hyped up. However, viewers were left disappointed as Mayweather won in a defensive and more passive manner. The second famous match came against MMA fighter Connor McGregor. While McGregor did manage to land more punches on Mayweather than anyone who had come before, Mayweather was still judged to have won after tiring the Irishman out.

Mayweather's boxing career might be over, but he still serves as a promoter for events. It was recently announced in 2020 that he would be fighting an exhibition match against YouTuber Logan Paul in 2021. One of the best (and most wealthy) boxers to ever exist, Floyd Mayweather certainly deserves the nickname "Money".
