England vs Argentina in a World Cup semifinal. Just sit with that for a second.

These two have given the World Cup some of its most famous moments - the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century in 1986, David Beckham's red card in 1998 and his penalty revenge in 2002, Antonio Rattin's long walk off the Wembley pitch in 1966 - and yet in all those years they have never once met in a World Cup semifinal. That changes on Wednesday, July 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with kickoff at 3 pm Eastern (8 pm in the UK). The winner goes to the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19 against France or Spain.

Argentina are the defending champions, chasing the first back-to-back World Cup wins since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. England are chasing their first final since they won the whole thing in 1966. I honestly cannot remember a semifinal with this much history sitting on top of it.

Bet365 has a full board up for this one - money line, To Advance, goals, goalscorers and more - and below I will walk through the numbers as they stood on Saturday night, right after Argentina punched their ticket.

How Both Teams Got Here

England's knockout run has been anything but comfortable. They beat DR Congo 2-1 in the Round of 32 with two late Harry Kane goals - in this same Atlanta stadium, by the way - then survived a wild 3-2 against host nation Mexico in the Round of 16, where Jude Bellingham scored twice in the space of two minutes, Kane converted a penalty, and Jarell Quansah was sent off. In the quarterfinal they needed extra time to get past Norway 2-1, with Bellingham scoring both goals, including the extra-time winner.

Argentina's road has been just as dramatic. They came back from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16, then went to extra time on Saturday night against Switzerland. Alexis Mac Allister headed them in front after 10 minutes, Dan Ndoye equalized in the 67th, and Breel Embolo was sent off for a second yellow shortly after. Even with the man advantage, Argentina could not break through until Julian Alvarez curled one into the top corner in the 112th minute, and Lautaro Martinez added a third at the death for the 3-1 final.

Lionel Messi has eight goals in the tournament and has scored in every game he has played. Bellingham and Kane have carried England's knockout rounds between them. Two heavyweight attacks, and two quarterfinals that were both level after 90 minutes. Keep that last part in mind - it matters for almost every market below.

The Money Line: England Slight Favourites

Here is the three-way money line at Bet365, which covers 90 minutes plus stoppage time only:
ResultOddsImplied Probability
England Win2.55About 39%
Draw3.20About 31%
Argentina Win2.87About 35%
That is about as tight as a World Cup semifinal board gets. England are favourites, but barely - the market gives them roughly a four-point edge over the world champions, and the draw is a live outcome at 3.20 given how both teams have been playing in the knockouts.

Bet365 has its Early Payout feature attached to this market, and there is a Parlay Boost flag on it as well if you are building this match into a bigger ticket.

To Advance: The Extra-Time Tell

To AdvanceOdds
England1.80
Argentina2.00
This is the market I would spend the most time thinking about, because the gap between it and the money line tells you what the market really expects.

England are 2.55 to win in 90 minutes but only 1.80 to advance. Argentina are 2.87 in 90 but a clean 2.00 to go through. That spread exists because the market thinks there is a very real chance this match is not settled in regulation - and honestly, why wouldn't it? England's quarterfinal went to extra time. Argentina's quarterfinal went to extra time. Argentina's 2022 title run went to penalties in the final. A knockout game between two evenly matched heavyweights is exactly the profile that goes long.

The practical point: know which bet you are placing. The money line settles at the end of stoppage time. To Advance covers extra time and penalties. Those are very different bets in a match like this one.

Goals: The Under Is Favoured, and For Good Reason

The main total sits at 2.5 goals, and the board leans clearly to the under:
LineOverUnder
0.51.0838.00
1.51.403.00
2.5 (main line)2.301.61
3.54.331.22
4.59.001.071
5.519.001.02
6.541.001.004
All of these settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. And here is Todd's favourite stat from the weekend: both of Saturday's quarterfinals - England vs Norway and Argentina vs Switzerland - were 1-1 after 90 minutes. Both would have landed under 2.5 on this exact market, even though the final scores after extra time were 2-1 and 3-1.

Semifinals tend to be cagey affairs anyway, and both of these teams just played 120 minutes on Saturday with only four days of recovery before a 3 pm kickoff in the Atlanta summer. The 1.61 on the under is short, but the market is not being irrational about it.

Goalscorers: Extra Time Counts Here

One quirk worth knowing: the goalscorer markets on this match carry Bet365's ET badge, meaning they include extra time, and the Sub On Play On flag means your player only needs to take the field at some point for the bet to stand.

The obvious names are the ones in form. Messi has eight in the tournament. Bellingham has four in England's last two matches alone. Kane has been England's steadiest source of goals all tournament, and both Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scored in the quarterfinal. In a match where extra time is a genuine possibility, a goalscorer market that includes those extra 30 minutes is worth more than one that does not.

Team News

England will be without Jarell Quansah, who is serving a two-match suspension after his red card against Mexico. Declan Rice came off against Norway and is a fitness concern heading into Wednesday. Argentina came through Saturday's extra-time win with the usual bumps of a 120-minute match, but nothing was confirmed as of the time of writing. Check the team sheets before kickoff - lineups in a World Cup semifinal move markets.

The Sports-King Note. Now for the fine print. This is one of the tightest semifinal boards you will ever see, and tight boards mean nobody is handing out value - England at 2.55, Argentina at 2.87 and the draw at 3.20 are all priced honestly. The under at 1.61 is short, and while the recent pattern supports it, one early goal changes the shape of the whole match. Remember that the money line and totals settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage only, while To Advance includes extra time and penalties - do not mix those up on a match this likely to go long. Both teams are running on four days of rest after 120-minute quarterfinals, which cuts both ways and is exactly the kind of thing the market has already priced in. As always, bet only what you can afford and inside the limits you set yourself.
England vs Argentina kicks off at 3 pm Eastern on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The winner faces France or Spain in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, July 19.
