Things are not looking good for Louis van Gaal.

The Manchester United manager, who was brought in to the club with a great amount of fanfare, is currently under siege right now as the fortunes of the team continue to plummet. Man Utd currently sits in 5th place in the English Premier League table, six points behind Man City. At this juncture, it seems nearly impossible to imagine Man Utd making a run to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

In addition, the club's Europa League hopes look fairly dim as well, as they lost in embarrassing fashion to FC Midtjylland earlier this week. While Man Utd are still the favourites to win the match-up, they are certainly not exhibiting the type of form necessary to beat teams such as Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United spent heavily this season and they don't have much to show for it. This means that Louis van Gaal is almost certain to get the axe, with some surprised that he hasn't been shown the door already.

With van Gaal almost certainly not returning next season, talk has turned to who might be leading Manchester United next season.

The clear front-runner at this juncture is Jose Mourinho, the mercurial former manager of Chelsea, Real Madrid and others. Mourinho is currently biding his team following his termination by Chelsea earlier this season, and many figure that he will eventually find himself being named the new manager of Man Utd in fairly short order.

Other possibilities for the position include Mauricio Pochettino, Ryan Giggs and Diego Simeone, with Pochettino and Giggs seen as the likeliest candidates.

Here are the current odds as to who will be named the next permanent manager of Manchester United:

Jose Mourinho, 1/4
Mauricio Pochettino, 7/2
Ryan Giggs, 5/1
Diego Simeone, 22/1
Sir Alex Ferguson, 33/1
