Wales Slightly Worse Than Even Money to Beat Northern Ireland

One of the more improbable match-ups of the round of 16 and the Euro 2016 championship will see Wales take on Northern Ireland.

There were a number of surprising teams that managed to qualify for the Round of 16, including the likes of Iceland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland was perhaps the most surprising, much to the delight of their supporters.

Wales played extremely well in the group stage, as they were led by Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale, who has been every bit as strong as his billing so far in this tournament.

Northern Ireland will need to focus on stopping Bale if they want to have a chance of winning this weekend, while they will also need to penetrate the Wales defense.

As mentioned, Wales is slightly worse than even money to win this weekend, as evidenced by these odds:

Wales, 2.05
Draw, 3.00
Northern Ireland, 4.33

Let's look at the implied odds of each result in this match-up:

Wales To Win, 48.78%
Draw, 33.33%
Northern Ireland To Win, 23.09%

As you can see, Wales is the clear favourite to move on to the next round of the tournament.

Here are the odds to qualify for the next round:

Wales, 1.44
Northern Ireland, 2.75

While Wales is certainly the favourite to win, Northern Ireland is a live underdog.
