The Lions Coach Who Runs on 80 Ounces of Coffee a Day

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell doesn't fake his energy. He manufactures it. During his first season in Detroit, Campbell revealed that his morning starts with two giant coffees from Starbucks. Not regular ventis. Not even standard iced coffees. We're talking two 40-ounce cups, each loaded with four espresso shots.Do the math. That's 80 ounces of coffee before noon. Add in the eight total shots of espresso, and you're staring at 1,100+ milligrams of caffeine in a single sitting. For comparison, the FDA advises adults to stay under 400 mg per day. Campbell clears that limit before his players hit the weight room.
Why does he do it? He says it's about matching the intensity he expects from his players. He's an old-school tight end turned coach who once joked about kneecap biting at his intro press conference. A guy wired this way doesn't exactly sip herbal tea.
The mix itself is staggering. One Starbucks espresso shot checks in around 75 mg of caffeine. Multiply by eight, and you're already at 600 mg. Add in 80 ounces of Pike Place coffee - roughly 12 mg per ounce - and you tack on another 960 mg. That's over 1,500 mg if you take the high end. Doctors call that dangerous. Campbell calls it "Tuesday."
NFL sidelines are brutal. Coaches live on little sleep, endless film study, and constant adrenaline. Most lean on Red Bulls or energy chews. Campbell? He chugs enough caffeine to fuel half a roster. And he's still pacing like he could throw on pads tomorrow.
The Lions play hard. They play with his edge. When their head coach walks in at 6 a.m. already buzzing like he's had six energy drinks, it sets a tone. Say what you want about his record, but there's no denying the man lives his brand.
