History:

The competition started in 1971 as the UEFA Cup. Prior to the competition, another similar event was organized under the name of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The inaugural UEFA Cup final was an all-English affair, with Spurs beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 on aggregate in 1972 to take the first title home.

After the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was discontinued following the 1998-99 season, domestic cup winners entered the UEFA Cup instead. This expanded the competition from the 1999-2000 season.


Rebranding as the UEFA Europa League:

The competition was rebranded as the UEFA Europa League for the 2009-10 season. The new format included a 48-team group stage, with Atletico Madrid winning the first title under the Europa League name.

Another major change arrived in 2024-25, when a single 36-team league phase replaced the group stage.


Format:

Clubs qualify through domestic league and cup results, with the number of places and entry rounds determined by UEFA's access list and association coefficient rankings. Some clubs also transfer into the competition from Champions League qualifying.

The league phase features 36 clubs in one table. Each team plays eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away.

- The top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16.
- Teams finishing ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, with the eight winners advancing to the round of 16.
- Teams finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition.

Champions League teams no longer drop into the Europa League after the league phase. Similarly, clubs eliminated from the Europa League league phase do not move into the Conference League.

The knockout phase play-offs, round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are played over two legs, home and away. The final is a single match at a venue selected by UEFA.


2026 Winners:

Aston Villa won the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League, beating Freiburg 3-0 in the final at Besiktas Park in Istanbul on May 20, 2026.

Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers scored as Villa claimed their first title in the competition. The victory also gave Unai Emery a record fifth UEFA Cup/Europa League title as a coach, following his successes with Sevilla and Villarreal.
