It remained one of the few powerhouses of tennis in America as numerous amateur and pro-level tournaments have found their home in Dallas over the years. Numerous invitational tournaments took place in the city during the 20th century. However, the glory faded as time went on, and tennis tournaments moved to other American cities and states. With the return of the Dallas Open tennis tournament, the days of glory just might find their way back to Dallas.

In addition to the Dallas Open (1983), Dallas also hosted the World Championship of Tennis finals between 1971 and 1989. That was the last instance of an ATP-level tournament being held in Dallas before the eventual return of the Dallas Open in 2022.

The Dallas Open Tennis tournament returned to Dallas after the relocation of the New York Open Tennis tournament and the Memphis Open Tennis tournament.

Memphis Open Tennis tournament was the longest-running tennis tournament in America. It was held on an annual basis between 1975 and 2017. In 2017, Memphis open tennis tournament was removed from the ATP calendar and relocated to New York. New York Open tennis tournament was held for three years between 2018 and 2020. However, sponsorship issues led to its cancellation. And that's how the Dallas Open found its room on the ATP Calendar.

The inaugural edition of the Dallas Open was held in 2022.
