The November Handicap closes the British Flat turf season at Doncaster, the course where the Lincoln opened it back in the spring. It is a big-field handicap for three-year-olds and up over a mile and a half, one of the oldest handicaps in the calendar, and it comes with a record nobody has broken: no horse has won it twice.
That record is the story this year. Last year's winner, Castle Cove, is in Bet365's market, and so is Lord Melbourne, who won it in 2024. One of them would have to do something no horse has done since the race began in 1876.

The Market
Nobody Knows heads the early market at 4.50, with Alfred Wincham next at 6.00 and Too Soon at 10.00. After those three it is wide open: 13.00 the next pair, and more than forty horses priced up in all.
Remember that Bet365's list is an early market, not the final field. The runners, the draw and the jockeys are confirmed at declarations, and plenty of these will not make the line-up.
Chasing History: Castle Cove and Lord Melbourne
Castle Cove (15.00) won this race last year for William Haggas, going off 4/1 joint favourite and beating the field by more than four lengths on heavy ground. Lord Melbourne (13.00) won it the year before for Ralph Beckett. Both are back in the market, and either one winning would be the first time a horse has won the November Handicap twice.
The handicapper is the obstacle. A November Handicap winner goes up in the weights, and coming back a year later means carrying more against a fresh crop of improving horses. That is a big part of why the record has stood for so long.
Others From Last Year
Atherstone Warrior (13.00) was third in this race last year as a three-year-old for Gary and Josh Moore, and he is joint fourth in the betting. Miss Dolly Rocker (51.00) was second last year at 33/1 for Faye Bramley, and she is a big price again. Master Builder (17.00) ran in the 2024 race as a three-year-old.
The Full Field
Bet365's early market lists 42 horses. Ages, weights, trainers, jockeys and the draw are added here once the field is declared.
How the Market Reads
In a race this big the each-way terms matter more than usual: Bet365 pays a quarter of the odds on the first four. Only three horses are shorter than 13.00, and more than half the list is 34.00 or bigger. Things that could move the market before Saturday: which horses are declared, the draw, the going after the autumn weather, and late jockey bookings.
Other races previewed on Sports-King this week: the Haldon Gold Cup at Aintree on Friday, and the autumn's other big Flat handicap, the Cesarewitch.
Final Word
The last big Flat handicap of the year is always hard to call, and this one has an extra question: can Castle Cove or Lord Melbourne become the race's first two-time winner? Nobody Knows and Alfred Wincham lead the market, but with four places paid and more than forty horses still in it, this is a race for reading the declarations before you settle on anything.
