The Ormskirk Handicap Hurdle is the third race on the first day of Aintree's November meeting, and it is the kind of race the market finds hard to call: fourteen runners, a Class 3 handicap over two miles and a furlong, and a spread of weights from 12st down to 10st 5lb. Bet365 has a clear favourite in an unbeaten young horse, and a lot of experienced handicappers lined up behind him.

The Favourite

Lyssenko (2.50) is the one everyone will be talking about. Dan Skelton's five-year-old is three from three in the form shown on the racecard, and he runs here off a handicap mark of 125, with Harry Skelton riding. That is the classic profile the market loves in a race like this: an unbeaten horse whose rating may not yet show how good he is. It is also the classic risk. The handicapper has only seen him win, so 125 is a guess at his level rather than a measure of it, and he makes his seasonal return here. At 2.50 the market makes him a 40% chance before the bookmaker's margin is taken out, which is a lot for a 14-runner handicap.

The Main Rivals

All In You (4.50) for Warren Greatrex has the best Racing Post Rating in the field at 141, against an official mark of 127, which is why he sits clear second favourite. He comes back after a break, and his last run was a fourth.

Trustintimes (6.00) won last time for Harry Fry and carries a 7lb penalty for it, taking him up to 11st 13lb, near the top of the weights. Bryan Carver rides. Penalised winners in handicaps are a regular source of argument: the extra weight is meant to slow them down, but a horse in form often carries it anyway.

Watamu (7.00) also won last time out, for Emma Lavelle, and does it off 11st 5lb without a penalty, with a Racing Post Rating of 140 that puts him right alongside All In You on the figures. Of the front four in the betting, he may be the one carrying the least.

The Weight Carriers

Dedicated Hero (9.00) is top weight at 12st, on a mark of 135, for Sandy Thomson. His form shows two wins before an eighth last time. Giving weight to the whole field over two miles on good ground is hard, but he has the highest official rating of anyone in the race. Bucephalus (17.00), a nine-year-old for Neil Mulholland, carries 11st 13lb off 134 and is the oldest runner in the race.

Melon (9.00) runs for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero with Jack Tudor booked, and the stable also saddles King Ulanda (26.00), who is one of the lightly weighted runners at 10st 6lb and has been running consistently, with form figures of 1-4-1-3-3-5.

The Rest of the Field

Bibe Mus (13.00) is the only four-year-old in the race, for Paul Nicholls, and returns after being pulled up on his last start. Manuelito (13.00) for Philip Hobbs and Johnson White fell last time and is another making his first run of the season.

Star Of Guiting (17.00) is worth a second look in a race that rewards pace: he has the best Topspeed figure in the field, 131, and gets in on 10st 10lb for Ewan Whillans. Gibbs Island (26.00) for Tom Lacey, Secret Vino (34.00) and Rewired (34.00), the bottom weight, complete the field.

How the Market Reads

The top four, Lyssenko, All In You, Trustintimes and Watamu, account for most of the market between them, and the price drops sharply after that. In a 14-runner handicap that is a lot of confidence in a small group. As with any early price, these add up to well over 100%, so treat them as an opening read. What usually moves a race like this: jockey bookings for the runners still without a rider, whether Lyssenko is backed into odds-on or drifts as punters weigh up his mark, and the going, since Aintree had been watering ahead of the meeting.

The race before it on the same card is the Aintree Novices Championship Hurdle Qualifier, over the same trip, where Dan Skelton's Risky Obsession is the favourite.

Final Word

Everything hangs on Lyssenko. If his mark of 125 underrates him, he is the obvious winner and the price is fair. If the handicapper has him about right, this is a competitive race with two in-form winners in Trustintimes and Watamu, a highly rated return from All In You, and a top weight with the best official mark in the field. That is why the 2.50 is the most interesting price on the board.
