The Silver Bowl Novices' Chase is one of the feature races on the first day of Aintree's November meeting: a Class 2 novice chase over three miles and a furlong, worth £40,000, with nine runners and some genuinely interesting horses among them. Dan Skelton runs three of the nine, the favourite is a Grade 1 winner over hurdles making his debut over fences, and the betting is tight at the top.

The Favourite
No Drama This End (2.00) is the class act on paper. Paul Nicholls' six-year-old won the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle last season and won four of his five hurdle starts, the only defeat coming at the Cheltenham Festival. He has an official rating of 144 and no chase form at all, so this would be his first run over fences, at three miles and a furlong, against several rivals who already have chase experience. That is a lot to ask, and it is why the price is evens rather than odds-on.
One thing to check before betting: he also holds an entry in Saturday's Grade 2 Rising Stars Novices' Chase over two and a half miles at the same meeting, and the Racing Post picked him out as one of the standout entries for that card. If connections choose Saturday, he will not run here, and this market changes completely.
The Skelton Trio
Dan Skelton saddles three. Royal Infantry (3.25) is the stable's main hope: a winner last time out, he carries a 5lb penalty for it, has an official rating of 140, and his Racing Post Rating of 147 is one of the best in the field. He has the chase experience the favourite lacks.
Blue Carpet (17.00) has been as consistent as anything in the race, with form of 2-1-2-1-2, and returns for his first run of the season off level weights. Kingston Narcissus (26.00) has been knocking on the door for a while, finishing second three times and then third in his latest runs, and carries a 5lb penalty.
The Other Contenders
Klimt Madrik (3.50) for Toby Lawes was second last time and runs off level weights with an official rating of 140, the same mark as Royal Infantry but without the penalty. The market has him barely behind Royal Infantry, and the two of them are the clear alternatives to the favourite.
Intosomethinggood (9.00), the only five-year-old, won last time for Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies and carries a 5lb penalty. Off The Jury (11.00) for Mickey Bowen has won his last two and carries the biggest penalty in the race, 8lb, which takes him up to top weight of 11st 10lb.
Johnny's Jury (21.00) for Jamie Snowden has the highest official rating in the race at 147, after a run of three straight wins before a third, and returns after a break. That is an unusual price for the top-rated horse in a nine-runner race, and it suggests the market wants to see how he takes to this test first.
Crest Of Fortune (41.00) for Anthony Honeyball is the outsider, but on the Racing Post's own figures he has the best Topspeed rating (148) and the best Racing Post Rating (154) in the field. At 41.00 the market is clearly reading his profile differently from the ratings, and he is the price on the board most worth a closer look.

How the Market Reads
The top three, No Drama This End, Royal Infantry and Klimt Madrik, take most of the market between them, and after that it drops sharply from 9.00. With only nine runners the each-way terms pay just the first two places at a quarter of the odds. The biggest swing factor is the favourite's declaration: if he goes for Saturday instead, Royal Infantry and Klimt Madrik become co-favourites in a far more open race. After that, watch the jockey bookings, especially for the three Skelton runners, which usually show which one the stable fancies most.
Two other Aintree races from the same Friday card are on Sports-King: the Aintree Novices Championship Hurdle Qualifier at 1:15 and the Ormskirk Handicap Hurdle at 1:50.
Final Word
This race turns on two questions. Does No Drama This End run here at all, and if he does, can a Grade 1 hurdler jump nineteen fences at the first attempt against horses that have already learned how? If the answer to both is yes, he is the one to beat. If not, Royal Infantry and Klimt Madrik bring the chase experience, and Crest Of Fortune is the outsider whose figures say he should be shorter than 41.00.
