The Haldon Gold Cup belongs to Exeter, but not this year. On October 27 the Jockey Club called off its West Country weekend at Exeter and Wincanton because an extremely dry summer and a warm, rainless autumn had left both courses on firm ground that was not safe for jump racing. Aintree stepped in and took the feature races at their original prize money, so the Haldon is run on the Mildmay course on Friday. The Silver Bowl Novices' Chase, the Rising Stars Novices' Chase and an £80,000 handicap chase made the same move, spread across Friday and Saturday.

It is still the same race: a Grade 2 limited handicap chase over two miles, worth £100,000, and one of the first big tests of the season for the top two-mile chasers. Nine go to post, and the market has Mirabad and JPR One clear of the rest.

The Favourite

Mirabad (2.25) runs for Dan Skelton with Harry Skelton riding, off an official rating of 155. His recent form reads 2-2-1-U-2, and he was second on his latest start, so he arrives with a run under his belt. The market has made him a clear favourite, and he gets 6lb from the top weight, JPR One.

The Top Weight

JPR One (3.50) is the highest-rated horse in the race at 161 and carries top weight of 11st 12lb for Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell. He won last time out. Giving weight to everything in a Grade 2 handicap is the hardest job in the race, but he has the class to do it, and on the Racing Post Rating he matches the favourite.

The Chasing Pack

Paul Nicholls runs two. Rubaud (7.00), ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, was fourth last time and races off 144. Sans Bruit (9.00) is lower in the weights off 130, and his Racing Post Rating of 170 is one of the highest in the field, which makes him an interesting each-way type at the price.

Daytime Dreaming (8.00) for T Ellis and Jack Andrews is another lightly weighted runner off 130, returning for his first run of the season after form of 4-1-1-2. Stencil (8.00) is the only five-year-old, for Tom George, and also returns after a break, having been pulled up on his final run last season.

Vanderpoel (13.00) for Ben Pauling won last time out and has the best Topspeed figure in the field at 161, a sign of how fast he has run, and at 13.00 he is a bigger price than his recent form suggests. Petit Tonnerre (15.00), the lowest-rated runner at 125, runs for Jonjo and A J O'Neill.

Brookie (34.00) for Anthony Honeyball is the outsider, but on the Racing Post Rating he has the best figure of all nine, 174. His recent form has been patchy, with a fall and a pulled-up among his last few runs, which is why he is the biggest price on the board.

How the Market Reads

Mirabad and JPR One take most of the market between them, and after them it opens up from 7.00. In a nine-runner race the each-way terms pay only the first two at a quarter of the odds, so backing the horses behind the front two each-way is a bet that one of them beats Mirabad or JPR One. Things that could move these prices before Friday: jockey bookings for the runners still without a rider, how the Mildmay course rides after the dry autumn, and any late non-runners, which could change the each-way terms.

Aintree's Friday card has three other races previewed on Sports-King: the Aintree Novices Championship Hurdle Qualifier at 1:15, the Ormskirk Handicap Hurdle at 1:50 and the Silver Bowl Novices Chase at 2:25.

Final Word

A different track but the same question as ever: can the class horse give weight away? JPR One has the rating and the recent win, Mirabad gets 6lb from him and the market likes that, and behind them Vanderpoel and Sans Bruit are the prices that look most interesting on the figures. Next year the Haldon should be back at Exeter, where it belongs.
