The Coral Gold Cup is one of the biggest staying handicap chases of the British jumps season, run over three and a quarter miles at Newbury at the end of November. It was first run in 1957 as the Hennessy Gold Cup, at Cheltenham, and has been run at Newbury since 1960. Hennessy sponsored it until 2016, it was the Ladbrokes Trophy from 2017, and it has carried the Coral name since 2022.

This year Wendigo heads Bet365's market at 5.00, with last year's winner Panic Attack back at 21.00.

The Favorite

Wendigo (5.00) is trained by Jamie Snowden and is a clear favorite with Bet365, priced at less than half the odds of anything else in the field.

The Chasers

Three are next at 11.00: Miami Magic, Mr Hope Street and Regent's Stroll, the Paul Nicholls chaser who is also in the market for the Paddy Power Gold Cup two weeks earlier. Holloway Queen, Montregard and Road To Home are at 15.00. At 17.00 is Salver, trained by Jamie and Josh Moore, a Grade 2 winner and a smart novice chaser last season, who would be stepping into open handicap company. Myretown is also 17.00. He went off the 4/1 favorite last year and fell.

Last Year's Race

Twenty-four ran on good to soft ground in 2025. Panic Attack won by six and a half lengths at 16/1 for Dan Skelton, ridden by Tristan Durrell and carrying a 4lb penalty for her win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup a fortnight earlier. Three Card Brag (25/1) was second for Gordon Elliott, The Changing Man (8/1) third and Gorgeous Tom (16/1) fourth. Panic Attack was the first mare to win both races in the same season, and the first horse to do the double since Celestial Gold in 2004.

The Full Field

Bet365's market lists all 43 early entries. Several of them are also entered in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, including Jagwar, Blueking D'Oroux and Quebecois, so the Cheltenham result on November 14 will shape this race. Grey Dawning (41.00) is the big name near the foot of the betting: he is the favorite for the Betfair Chase a week earlier and would carry a big weight here. Three Card Brag, last year's runner-up, is 41.00. The final runners, weights and jockeys are added here once the field is declared.

How the Market Reads

At 5.00, Wendigo is priced as about a one in five chance, and everything else is 11.00 or bigger. Panic Attack won last year at 16/1, and in a field this size the each-way terms, which pay four places, matter. Things that could change the picture before the race: how the Paddy Power Gold Cup and Betfair Chase go, the final declarations and weights, the Newbury ground, and late jockey bookings.

Final Word

Wendigo is a clear favorite in a race that usually rewards an each-way approach. With the defending champion, last year's runner-up and the fallen favorite all back, plus several horses who could run at Cheltenham first, the market is likely to move a good deal before the race.
