Dubai Tennis Championships are currently known as Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships for sponsorship reasons. The tournament is an annual global event that features matches for both Men and Women. Men's and Women's events are scheduled on the ATP Tour and WTA Tour, respectively.

The competitions hold the status of ATP Tour 500 Series and WTA 500. Dubai Duty-Free organizes the events under the patronage of UAE's vice-president Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The matches are played at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre, Dubai. The tennis complex has a seating capacity of almost 5000 people.

Both Men's and Women's matches are played on Hard Outdoor Courts. They are considered to have a medium-fast speed. Often, the Duty-Free Dubai Championships are compared to Shanghai and Basel Open tennis tournaments in terms of speed and surfaces.

The Inaugural edition of the Dubai Tennis Championships was held in 1993. Back then, it had the status of the ATP 250 series. However, in 2001 the status of the premier tennis tournament was elevated to ATP 500 Series.

The Inaugural Women's event was held in 2001 as part of the WTA tour. Over the years, it has alternated between WTA 500 and WTA 1000 events.
