The competitions hold the status of ATP Tour 500 Series and WTA 500. Dubai Duty-Free organizes the events under the patronage of UAE's vice-president Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.


Location:

The matches are played at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre, Dubai. The tennis complex has a seating capacity of almost 5000 people.


Courts:

Both Men's and Women's matches are played on Hard Outdoor Courts. They are considered to have a medium-fast speed. Often, the Duty-Free Dubai Championships are compared to Shanghai and Basel Open tennis tournaments in terms of speed and surfaces.


History:

The Inaugural edition of the Dubai Tennis Championships was held in 1993. Back then, it had the status of the ATP 250 series. However, in 2001 the status of the premier tennis tournament was elevated to ATP 500 Series.

The Inaugural Women's event was held in 2001 as part of the WTA tour. Over the years, it has alternated between WTA 500 and WTA 1000 events.

Roger Federer also shares the record for most consecutive titles with a streak of three consecutive Duty-Free Dubai Tennis Championships titles. Novak Djokovic is another player who has won 3 consecutive Dubai Tennis Championship Titles.

Novak Djokovic:

Novak Djokovic has won the Dubai Tennis Championships five times. He won the title in 2009-11, 2013, and 2020. His most iconic moment at the Dubai Tennis championships came in the Final of the 2011 Dubai Tennis Championships when he won the title after defeating Roger Federer in 2011's Final.

The former world number one and Belgian Tennis Star Justine Henin holds the record for most WTA Dubai Tennis Championships titles. She won a total of 4 titles. Her first two wins came in 2003 and 2004, while she added another two titles to her cabinet with victories in 2006 and 2007.

Venus Williams:

The American Tennis Star Venus Williams won the Dubai Tennis Championships three times. Her victories came in 2009, 2010, and 2014.


Prize Money:

Dubai duty-Free tennis championships remain among the few tennis tournaments around the world that offer equal prize money in the Men's and Women's categories. The prize money for the recent event was around 3 million US Dollars.
