It's pretty easy to make the argument that American swimmer Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympians of all time, if not the greatest athlete of all time. Michael Phelps owns a number of Olympic records that will never be broken.
Phelps' reign of dominance in the Olympics started at the 2004 Summer Olympics and ended at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which was his last.
In total, Phelps won a total of 23 Olympic gold medals, as well as five additional medals.
23 gold medals and 28 total medals? Two records that will NEVER be broken.

Phelps started his reign of terror off at the 2004 Summer Olympics, when he won six gold medals (100 meter butterfly, 200 meter butterfly, 200 meter medley, 400 meter medley, 4x200 meter freestyle and 4x100 meter medley), as well as two bronze medals (200 meter freestyle, 4x100 meter freestyle).
At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps ran the board in events that he entered, winning gold medals in all eight of the events that he entered (200 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle, 200 meter medley, 400 meter medley, 4x100 meter freestyle, 4x200 meter freestyle, 4x100 meter medley).
Phelp's performance in 2008 will never be matched.
In 2012, Phelps added another six medals to his trophy case, as he won four gold medals (100 meter butterfly, 200 meter medley, 4x200 meter freestyle, 4x100 meter medley) as well as two silver medals (200 meter butterfly, 4x100 meter freestyle).
In 2016, Phelps won a total of five gold medals (200 meter butterfly, 200 meter medley, 4x100 meter freestyle, 4x200 meter freestyle, 4x100 meter medley), as well as a silver in the 100 meter butterfly.
At the end of the 2016 Summer Olympics, Phelps announced that he was calling it a career.
