Peyton Manning. Tom Brady. Joe Montana. Patrick Mahomes.
The list of phenomenal NFL quarterbacks who won Super Bowls is quite long but did any of them ever win a Super Bowl in their very first season in the league?
The answer: no. A rookie QB has NEVER won the Super Bowl.
Tom Brady won a Super Bowl in his SECOND year in the league. After all, he was with the team in 2000, throwing three passes for one completion, and then won a Super Bowl the following year. Brady was not a rookie in 2001.
Mahomes won a Super Bowl at an early age but was also not a rookie.
In the history of the NFL, a rookie quarterback has never won the Super Bowl.
In fact, a rookie quarterback has never STARTED in the Super Bowl, let alone won one.
Five rookie quarterbacks have started in the Conference Championship game, only to lose. They are:
Shaun King, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2000
Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers, 2005
Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens, 2009
Mark Sanchez, New York Jets, 2010
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers, 2023
Of the five quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez had the best game, throwing for 257 yards, two touchdowns and 1 interception.
Ben Roethlisberger was alright, throwing for two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Shaun King and Joe Flacco were absolutely putrid, combining for five interceptions and zero touchdowns.
Brock Purdy got off to a strong start against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, completing four passes for 23 yards before being knocked out of the game with an injury.
