The Spanish champions, Real Madrid eliminated Manchester United 3-2 on aggregate in the round of 16 and in the group phase they came 2nd out of Group D behind Borussia Dortmund and ahead of Ajax and Manchester City. In the Spanish La Liga, Real Madrid are in second place, 13 points behind Barcelona and one point ahead of city rivals Atletico.
