Italian Serie A - 2016-2017 season logo - CrestThe summer transfer market came to an end a few days ago. Looking back, the Italian clubs were quite active in it. More active than usual.

There is money in Serie A these days. Juventus are a serious European contender again. Inter Milan and AC Milan were recently sold to wealthy Chinese firms. And Roma and Napoli have been in the mood to spend. Things are advancing in Italian football from the financial side of things.

One of the first groups to benefit from recent changes were the players.

Here are the top paid footballers in the Italian Serie A at the start of the 2016/17 season, according to the Italian Gazzetta dello Sport.

With the record breaking sale of Paul Pogba to Manchester United, Juventus had funds to spare this summer and they splashed a big chunk (no pun intended) on Gonzalo Higuain, last year's top goalscorer in Serie A.

Inter Milan and AC Milan have wealthy owners now and it certainly looks like they will bump up their spending in the near future. We might even see some big names heading to Milan as early as this winter.

Let's hope that the recent influx of funds in the Italian club football is a step towards bringing the league back into the global spotlight.

It was not so long ago when the Italian league was 'the one'.
