Mario Gotze Returns to Westfalenstadion to Reset

Mario's move to Munich in 2013 was one of the most highly publicized stories of the summer that year. After joining Dortmund's youth academy at eight years of age, Gotze progressed to the first team in 2009 and over the four years that followed helped his club win two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup. He also helped his team make it to the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich were on a mission to re-establish their dominance in German football back then and that also meant weakening their bitter rival, Dortmund. The purchase of Mario Gotze for €37m seemed like the perfect move. Gotze found it hard to establish himself under the famous manager Pep Guardiola though and spent the next three years playing a fairly minor role at the club.

The 24-year old Gotze is now back in Dortmund on a four-year deal worth €22m, where he hopes to win back the love of BVB fans with convincing performances in a familiar surrounding.

Gotze's transfer back to Dortmund is not one of the biggest transfers of this summer, but it is a significant one nonetheless. Will the Germany's 2014 World Cup final winning goalscorer be able to prove himself again playing alongside Marco Reus and co. remains to be seen.

Good luck Mario!
