World Darts Championship Betting UK - How to Bet on the Ally Pally, Honestly
This is our World Darts Championship betting guide for UK fans: how the PDC World Championship works, the markets worth understanding, what the sets format does to the prices and why the higher average does not always win. The 2026/27 Championship is scheduled for 11 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 at Alexandra Palace, with 128 players. No picks here - just the format, the record and honest maths.

Sets, Not Legs: the Format
| ROUND | FORMAT |
|---|---|
| Rounds 1 and 2 | Best of 5 sets |
| Round 3 and last 16 | Best of 7 sets |
| Quarter-finals | Best of 9 sets |
| Semi-finals | Best of 11 sets |
| Final | Best of 13 sets |
The World Championship is played in sets, each set the first to three legs, and matches get longer every round. In a deciding set a player has to win by two clear legs, with a sudden-death leg if it reaches 5-5. For betting, this matters. The shorter the match, the more room there is for one hot spell or a run of missed doubles to decide it. In the early rounds, first to three sets, an upset is easier to pull off than in a final that needs seven. That does not make every first-round outsider a good bet, because the price already knows the format. It just means a short match tells you less about a player than a long one.

A British Title, Seven Years Running
Every world champion since 2020 has come from Great Britain: Peter Wright of Scotland twice, Gerwyn Price of Wales, and then four straight English winners in Michael Smith, Luke Humphries and Luke Littler, who has won it twice. Littler became the youngest world champion in January 2025, aged 17, and retained the title a year later by beating Gian van Veen 7-1. If you back a home player, the same rule applies as in any sport: if you would not take the price on a stranger, do not take it on a favourite. A famous name is already in the price.
The Average Sometimes Lies
The three-dart average is the best-known number in darts and a sensible first guide, but it does not decide matches. In two of the last seven finals the loser had the higher average: Peter Wright beat Michael van Gerwen in 2020 despite averaging 102.79 to 102.88, and beat Michael Smith in 2022 averaging 98.34 to 99.22. Doubles and the sets won when it is tight are what count, and the bookmakers watch the averages just as closely as you do.
Where to Watch
In the UK and Ireland, Sky Sports has been the television home of the World Championship for years, and the 2026/27 first round is live on Sky Sports. Check the listings for each session. If you bet in play, watch the pictures you are betting on: a delayed stream is a real disadvantage in darts, because the prices move after every leg.
How to Bet on the Darts: the Markets
Match winner: who wins the match. There are no draws in darts. Correct score: the exact result in sets, such as 3-1. Set handicap: one player is given or gives up sets. Total 180s: over or under a line in a match. Highest checkout: who hits the biggest finish, or whether a set number is reached. Outright: who wins the tournament. Nine-darter in the tournament: whether anyone throws a perfect leg.
Illustrative example - not real Bet365 prices. 18+ only.
| MATCH WINNER | PRICE |
|---|---|
| Player A | 1.40 |
| Player B | 2.90 |
| CORRECT SCORE (BEST OF 5) | PRICE |
|---|---|
| Player A 3-0 | 3.25 |
| Player A 3-1 | 3.60 |
| Player A 3-2 | 5.00 |
| Player B 3-2 | 7.00 |
Divide 1 by each match-winner price and add them up and this example comes to 105.9 per cent. That extra 5.9 is the bookmaker's margin, the price of playing. It is in every market, and in specials like correct score it is usually bigger.
The Nine-Darter
A nine-darter is the perfect leg: 501 in nine darts. There had been 16 at the PDC World Championship up to and including 2025/26, two of them in finals: Adrian Lewis in 2011 and Michael Smith in 2023. There have also been tournaments with none at all, most recently 2025/26. So a bet on a nine-darter in the tournament is not close to a sure thing, bigger field or not. The price tells you how likely the market thinks it is, and like every price it includes the margin.
Outright Bets, Honestly
A bet on the world champion weeks before the tournament has two costs that are easy to forget. Outright markets usually carry a bigger margin than single matches, and your stake is tied up until January. Then there is the draw: which half of the bracket a player lands in changes his chances. If you back an outright, use money you are happy to leave alone for weeks.
Accumulators, Honestly
An accumulator puts several selections on one slip: the prices multiply and the possible return grows quickly. What the slip does not show is that you multiply the bookmaker's margin too, once per selection, and one losing leg sinks the whole thing. It is not a way to win more. It is entertainment with a higher price.
