Sports Nicknames - The Milkman

Bruno Fernandes might be the most in-form player in the Premier League at the moment. He has seemingly revitalized Manchester United, with them challenging (at the time of writing) for their first Premier League title in over 9 years. But this star hasn't come out of nowhere.

Fernandes actually began his professional career in Italy, with Novara Calcio. He then moved to Udinese and Sampdoria over the next 3 years. While he performed well enough, the game in Italy didn't seem to suit him that well. Thus, he moved back to his native Portugal with Sporting CP in 2017.

It was at Sporting that Fernandes truly lit up and caught the eye, thanks to his quality and creative performances. He scored 4 goals in his first 5 Primeira Liga games and would finish the season with the second most goals for the club - 16 across all competitions. He was named Player of the Year for the season, but still had more to show. In the 2018-19 season, he would score 31 goals in all competitions, becoming the highest-scoring Portuguese midfielder to do so in a single season. Such form caught the eye of Manchester United, who signed him for a fee that reportedly sits around €80 million (£67.6 million).

At United, Fernandes has continued his excellent form, scoring 28 goals in 53 appearances, as well as getting 14 assists over his 2 seasons with the club. United fans affectionately gave him the nickname "the milkman" after seeing a picture of him drinking milk to recover from a game against Brighton.

Fernandes is lighting up the Premier League. Whether or not that will lead to trophies for United is still up in the air, but they will certainly now feel that it is more likely than it has been for quite some time.
