A college basketball season offers plenty of opportunities to recover from a bad night. March Madness takes that comfort away. Once the NCAA tournament begins, a single defeat ends a team's pursuit of the national championship.

That pressure connects the tournament's biggest names with schools that rarely receive the same attention. A favourite can spend months building its reputation, only to have an unfamiliar opponent take control of the conversation in one afternoon.

This guide covers the men's Division I tournament. The 2027 edition introduces a larger field, with 76 teams competing for a championship that will be decided in Detroit on April 5.


The 2027 NCAA Tournament

Selection Sunday falls on March 14, when the field and bracket are due to be announced. Games begin two days later, with Dayton, Ohio, and Wichita, Kansas, sharing the expanded Opening Round.

The move from 68 to 76 teams adds eight places to the tournament. It also increases the opening stage from four games to 12, with each host city staging three games on Tuesday and three on Wednesday.

Once those games are complete, the competition returns to a field of 64. The schedule then follows the familiar progression through the first weekend, regional rounds and Final Four.

Selection Sunday: March 14, 2027.

Opening Round: March 16 and 17.

First Round: March 18 and 19.

Second Round: March 20 and 21.

Sweet 16: March 25 and 26.

Elite Eight: March 27 and 28.

Final Four semifinals: April 3.

National championship game: April 5.

Ford Field hosts both national semifinals and the final. The teams taking part will be determined over the course of the 2026-27 season and the tournament itself.


How March Madness Began

The first NCAA men's basketball tournament was held in 1939, when Oregon won a competition involving just eight teams. Its small field bears little resemblance to the event that now occupies several weeks of the sporting calendar.

Expansion gradually changed the tournament's reach. The field grew to 64 in 1985, to 65 in 2001 and to 68 in 2011. The 2027 increase to 76 marks another step in that development.

Through those changes, the central attraction has remained easy to understand. Teams from different conferences meet in a knockout competition, and even a heavily favoured contender has to keep winning to stay involved.


How Teams Qualify and Advance

The 2027 field consists of 32 automatic qualifiers and 44 at-large selections. Winning a conference tournament secures an automatic place. The selection committee fills the remaining spots by evaluating teams that have not qualified through that route.

The committee also seeds the field and places teams in the bracket. Conference membership alone does not determine an at-large invitation, and there is no fixed limit on how many teams one conference can send.

The Opening Round brings together the 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large selections. Automatic qualifiers face other automatic qualifiers, while the at-large teams play within their own group. The 12 winners join 52 teams that begin in the First Round.

From there, four regional brackets each contain 16 teams. Two victories take a team to the Sweet 16, and another two secure a regional championship and a place in the Final Four.

A team entering in the First Round needs six wins to become national champion. A team starting in the Opening Round needs seven. The bracket determines the route ahead, so surviving one difficult matchup can immediately bring another into view.


Championship History and Memorable Upsets

UCLA holds the men's record with 11 national championships. Ten of those titles arrived between 1964 and 1975, a period that established the Bruins as the tournament's most successful programme.

The event's appeal also comes from results at the other end of the seeding order. In 2018, UMBC defeated Virginia 74-54 to become the first No. 16 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in the men's tournament. Fairleigh Dickinson produced another such result in 2023, beating Purdue 63-58.

Those games help explain why the bracket attracts attention beyond the usual college basketball audience. A seed describes a team's position entering the competition, but the game still has to be played.

What Happened in the 2026 Tournament?

Michigan finished its championship run with a 69-63 victory over UConn at Lucas Oil Stadium on April 6. The result gave the Wolverines their second national title and their first since 1989.

Dusty May's team completed the season with a 37-3 record. Elliot Cadeau scored 19 points in the final, while Michigan converted 25 of its 28 free throws to help secure the trophy.

The final required a different kind of performance from Michigan's earlier games. The Wolverines had scored at least 90 points in each of their first five tournament victories, including a 91-73 semifinal win over Arizona. Against UConn, they had to finish the job in a much lower-scoring contest.


NCAA March Madness Betting Markets

March Madness offers markets covering individual games as well as a team's progress through the bracket. The available selections and settlement rules depend on the sportsbook.

National champion: Select the team that will win the tournament. Futures prices can change as results, injuries and the bracket alter expectations.

Seeding provides a starting point for assessing a matchup. Ball handling, rebounding, shooting and the ability to defend without conceding free throws can all help explain how two teams might perform against one another.

The new Opening Round also adds a scheduling consideration for more of the field. Its winners must travel onward and prepare for another opponent during the same week.

Recent form and player availability matter, but so does the price attached to a selection. An impressive team can still face a difficult route, and an appealing underdog story does not automatically make a bet worthwhile.

March Madness asks teams to solve a new problem every time they advance. By the final night in Detroit, one of the 76 entrants will have found enough answers to claim the championship.
