Russia destroyed Canada earlier in the tournament, winning a preliminary round game by the score of 6-0. One of Canada's best players, Alexis Lafreniere, was injured during the game with the Russians, and he will be at full strength for Sunday's clash.

Canada earned their way into the finals by defeating the reigning champions from Finland by a score of 5-0, while the Russians eked their way through to the finals after defeating Sweden in overtime.

Canada and Russia have played for the gold medal eight times in the past, with both team holding four victories. Canada won the most recent clash in 2015, with Connor McDavid leading the Canadian squad to victory.

After getting off to an uneven start in the tournament, Canada has looked much better in its last two games, regaining its standing as the favourites to win the tournament.

The Russian squad will need to fend off the dual attack of Barrett Hayton and Alexis Lafreniere, both of whom are in the top 10 of scoring at the World Juniors.

The Canadians, on the other hand, will have to keep a close eye on Alexander Khovanov, who is leading the Russian team in scoring.

Joel Hofer has been practically perfect for the Canadians in goal, notching a 1.30 GAA over four games. Hofer posted a shutout against the Finnish team and will be getting the start for the Canadians on Sunday.

Yaroslav Askarov will be getting the start for the Russians - he has posted a 2.71 GAA through his first five games of the tournament.
