Event – WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz
Time & Date – 7 pm, Saturday, March 6th, 2010
Venue – Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio
The Arnold Sports Festival is thrilled to include a visit in this year’s program from the planet’s leading lighter weight classes mixed martial arts promotion. World Extreme Cagefighting makes its first trip to Ohio on Saturday, and brings with it some of the quickest, most action-packed matchups around.
The WEC bantamweight championship found a new home the last time it was up for grabs, and it’s on the line again in the current champion’s first title defense. Bowles faces a hungry Cruz who’s worked hard for a second chance to reach the top and learnt much since his last opportunity.
The former bantamweight champion joins the lineup and is ready to bounce back from the startling loss that stripped him of his first belt. Seasoned contender Torres goes up against focussed Benavidez in a bout that will shuffle the division.
Another formerly crowned king is set to prove he’s still got what it takes, but this one is four fights deep. UFC lightweight success Pulver won his first WEC featherweight contest before tripping into a downward spiral and is working hard to turn the tide. Opponent Vazquez, however, is also looking to turn the tide after failing twice since getting signed.
A submission specialist who’s met with favorable decisions in his first two WEC fights takes on a well-rounded fellow featherweight in exactly the same position. Taurosevicius is eager to impress in his third WEC bout, but so is Davis.
Frustrated by the disagreeable relief that comes from a split decision, an experienced and gritty lightweight who started off his pro career with four straight losses goes toe-to-toe with a fervent rival who shares his foe’s frustration. Palaszewski and Darabedyan are after the same thing: a more decisive finish with both feet on the ground.
All the hard-earned skill found in these five pairings makes it hard to believe that 47’s main card comes along with an opening act, but it does. Twelve fighters form the official undercard, and, with the explosive talent often found in voracious young guns, the six preliminary bouts might just overshadow the five main events.

Here’s a closer look at 47’s main card.
BOWLES VS. CRUZ
This bantamweight bout pairs Bowles with Cruz for the first time. Professionally undefeated Bowles heads into his ninth career fight and first ever title defense after an incredible performance earned him knockout of the night honors in his latest jaunt to the cage, while Cruz finds himself with his second ever opportunity to sport a career belt after a unanimous decision in his last appearance earned him fight of the night honors and five wins in a row. Bowles: 8-0 (5-0 WEC). Cruz: 14-1 (4-1 WEC).
29-year-old Brian Bowles began his MMA career in May of 2006 when he forced Tim Honeycutt to submit in the first round at Wild Bill’s Fight Night 2. His most recent bout headlined WEC 42: Torres vs. Bowles on August 9th of last year where he earned his first belt and prevented a fourth title defense by sending Miguel to the stars in round one. Bowles’ 8 wins include two knockouts, one technical knockout, and five submissions. He has no losses thus far, has attained one title out of one opportunity, and is determined to keep a firm grip on his first decoration. Born in West Virginia and fighting out of Georgia, Bowles entered mixed martial arts in his mid-twenties, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of Hardcore Gym, excels in wrestling and boxing, likes to work under pressure and have the control that accountability brings, is motivated by the fear of an embarrassing defeat and the desire to be respected by his fellow fighters, wants to remain in the cream of the crop so that he can test his skills against the planet’s best and entertain his fans at the same time, and juggles his life as a professional fighter with a career in sales for Pepsi.
24-year-old Dominick “Dominator” Cruz began his MMA career in January of 2005 when he defeated Eddie Castro via split decision at RITC 67: Back to the Dodge. His most recent bout took place at WEC 42: Torres vs. Bowles on August 9th of last year where he defeated Joseph Benavidez via unanimous decision. Cruz’s 14 wins include one knockout, four technical knockouts, one submission, and eight decisions, while a submission delivered by Urijah Faber gives him his 1 loss. He has fought in one title fight. Born in and fighting out of California, Cruz has been involved in wrestling throughout his whole life and competed regularly during his high school years, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of Alliance MMA, has enhanced his wrestling background with a strong boxing base, values teamwork and optimism, endeavors to be a positive influence on those that he affects, names his mom as his hero, and worked in customer service prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
Will Bowles manage to remain undefeated and defend his first ever championship, or will Cruz be successful in his second title fight after missing out in the featherweight division?
TORRES VS. BENAVIDEZ
Torres and Benavidez meet for the first time in this bantamweight bout. A stunned Torres came to less a belt and had to say goodbye to a 17-fight winning streak including three title defenses the last time he set foot in the cage, while Benavidez most recently dished out a TKO that snapped his sole loss and proved that he can pass. Torres: 37-2 (5-1 WEC). Benavidez: 11-1 (3-1 WEC).
29-year-old Miguel Angel Torres began his MMA career in March of 2000 when he earned a round one technical knockout against Larry Pulliam at Finke’s Full Contact Challenge. His most recent bout headlined WEC 42: Torres vs. Bowles on August 9th of last year where Brian spoiled his first belt’s fourth defense by putting him to sleep in the first round. Torres’ 37 wins include one knockout, eight technical knockouts, twenty-two submissions, and six decisions, while the Bowles knockout and one decision make up his 2 losses. He has attained one title out of one opportunity, and defended three times. Born in and fighting out of Indiana, Torres took up taekwondo when he entered martial arts at the age of seven and began kickboxing when he was fourteen, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of Team Sityodtong, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has a strong Muay Thai base, names his father as his hero and thanks him for encouraging hard work and dedication, likes to promote well-being within his community and lead by example for his daughter, compares the simple complexity of mixed martial arts to the complex simplicity of understanding women, is fluent in Spanish, has an undergraduate degree in marketing, loves soccer, spent five years working as a radiologist assistant, and enjoys teaching at Torres Martial Arts when unoccupied by his own professional fighting career.
25-year-old Joseph Benavidez began his MMA career in June of 2006 when he forced Brandon Shelton to submit in the second round at Universal Fight Promotions. His most recent bout took place at WEC 45: Cerrone vs. Ratcliff on December 19th of last year where he earned a round one technical knockout against Rani Yahya. Benavidez’s 11 wins include three technical knockouts, six submissions, and two decisions, while a decision in favor of Dominick Cruz gives him his 1 loss. Born in Texas and fighting out of California, Benavidez participated regularly in high school and college wrestling, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of Team Alpha Male, credits Urijah Faber for guiding him into the world of mixed martial arts, names his mother and grandmother as his heroes, likes to win for the family, friends, and fans that have encouraged him along the way, hopes to have continued success so that he can stay in MMA for as long as possible, loves volleyball and dreamt of turning pro at a time, and worked in screen printing prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
Will Torres return from his last lesson that much closer to invincibility, or will Benavidez be another example of ambition clouding wisdom’s skies?
PULVER VS. VAZQUEZ
This featherweight bout pits Pulver against Vazquez for the first time. Pulver is riding a dangerous four-fight losing streak after a guillotine choke dropped him into the deepest pit of his career, while Vazquez was left frustrated the last time around after a repeat split decision saw him lose two in a row. Pulver: 22-12-1 (1-4 WEC). Vazquez: 13-4 (0-2 WEC).
35-year-old Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver began his MMA career in April of 1999 when he earned a round one technical knockout against Curtis Hill at Bas Rutten Invitational 2. His most recent bout took place at WEC 41: Faber vs. Brown II on June 7th of last year where Josh Grispi forced him to submit in the first round. Pulver’s 22 wins include eleven knockouts, two technical knockouts, three submissions, and six decisions; his 12 losses include three knockouts, three technical knockouts, five submissions, and one decision; and he shares 1 draw with Alfonso Alcarez. He has attained one title after two opportunities, and defended twice. Born in Washington and fighting out of Idaho, Pulver took up wrestling when he entered martial arts at the age of six and participated regularly at the high school and college levels, started to box in his teens and added jujitsu to his schedule as a young adult, holds a 4-0 pro boxing record, currently trains at and is proud to have founded Driven Training Center, names his mom as his hero and admires her selflessness, likes to push his limits, values agility, has an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and sociology, and enjoyed coaching fellow wrestlers before concentrating on his own professional fighting career.

His most recent bout took place at WEC 43: Cerrone vs. Henderson on October 10th of last year where Deividas Taurosevicius defeated him via split decision. Vazquez’s 13 wins include one technical knockout, eight submissions, and four decisions, while his 4 losses have all been decisions. Will Pulver find some way to get out of the red and better his 1-4 WEC record, or will Vazquez drop his opponent another six feet and finally prove worthy after two failed attempts?
TAUROSEVICIUS VS. DAVIS
Taurosevicius meets Davis for the first time in this featherweight bout. Both Taurosevicius and Davis are riding two-fight winning streaks into their third WEC test, each fighter coming off a unanimous decision after debuting with mixed reviews. Taurosevicius: 12-3 (2-0 WEC). Davis: 15-2 (2-0 WEC).
32-year-old Deividas Taurosevicius began his MMA career in November of 2002 when a decision in favor of Mike Acosta left him defeated at SF 1: Bragging Rights. His most recent bout took place at WEC 46: Varner vs. Henderson on January 10th of this year where he defeated Mackens Semerzier via unanimous decision. Taurosevicius’ 12 wins include eight submissions and four decisions, while his 3 losses have all been decisions. Born in Lithuania and fighting out of New York, Taurosevicius spent time practicing sambo, judo, and kickboxing in 1998 and dedicated himself to the world of mixed martial arts four years later, currently trains at and is proud to have founded Taurus MMA, holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names his mother as his hero, likes being challenged by the intricacy of mixed martial arts, is fluent in Lithuanian and Russian, has an undergraduate degree in business administration, and enjoyed an internationally successful rugby career before venturing into pro martial arts.
29-year-old L.C. Davis began his MMA career in February of 2006 when he earned a round two technical knockout against Nick Wright at VFC 12: Warpath. His most recent bout took place at WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo on November 18th of last year where he defeated Diego Nunes via unanimous decision. Davis’ 15 wins include one knockout, four technical knockouts, six submissions, and four decisions, while one submission and one decision make up his 2 losses. Born in Missouri and fighting out of Iowa, Davis participated regularly in college wrestling, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of American Jiu-Jitsu Academy, names his dad as his hero, admires a long line of individuals including Pat Miletich, Josh Neer, GSP, Anderson Silva, and Michael Jordan, likes facing the physical and mental tests that MMA competition entails, has an undergraduate degree in exercise science, and enjoyed coaching college-level wrestlers before deciding to concentrate on his own professional fighting career.
Taurosevicius has won more than half of his fights via submission and has only been defeated by the scorecards. Will he win another submission, or will Davis be the first to finish him early?
PALASZEWSKI VS. DARABEDYAN
This lightweight bout sees Palaszewski take on Darabedyan for the first time. Palaszewski’s last visit to the cage granted him a split decision and evened his WEC record to 2-2, while Darabedyan was also granted a split decision most recently but left disappointed by his middling WEC debut. Palaszewski: 33-13 (2-2 WEC). Darabedyan: 9-1 (1-0 WEC).
26-year-old Bart “Bartimus” Palaszewski began his MMA career in January of 2002 when Cole Escovedo forced him to submit in the first round at UA 1: The Genesis. His most recent bout took place at WEC 45: Cerrone vs. Ratcliff on December 19th of last year where he defeated Anthony Pettis via split decision. Palaszewski’s 33 wins include eight knockouts, seven technical knockouts, ten submissions, and eight decisions, while one technical knockout, three submissions, and nine decisions make up his 13 losses. Born in Poland and fighting out of Illinois, Palaszewski practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu regularly during his adolescence, delved into amateur boxing for a short while, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of Team Curran, names Jeff Curran as his hero, likes the pressure of fighting and the reward of winning, and settled into the world of professional MMA shortly after high school.
23-year-old Karen Darabedyan began his MMA career in July of 2006 when he earned a round one technical knockout against Joey Alvarado at California Xtreme Fighting 2. His most recent bout took place at WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo on November 18th of last year where he officially entered his new promotion with a split decision victory against Rob McCullough. Darabedyan’s 9 wins include three technical knockouts, one submission, and five decisions, while a decision in favor of Koji Oishi gives him his 1 loss. Born in Armenia and fighting out of California, Darabedyan took up karate when he entered martial arts at the age of five and began taekwondo four years later, has extensive experience in judo, currently trains with and feels privileged to be a part of Main Event Sports Club, holds a black belt in karate and another in taekwondo, names his parents as his heroes, strives to put on a good show for his fans across the country, is fluent in Armenian, and spent two years in college before deciding to focus on his professional fighting career.
Palaszewski has yet to meet unconsciousness in the cage, or any place else, when it comes to what his long career has seen him face, and his foe has yet to dole out oblivion. Perhaps Darabedyan will follow up his mediocre WEC debut with an astonishing knockout victory?
Prelims can sometimes get lost in a main card’s shadow, but there’s no need to bring a flashlight to WEC 47. The six official openers include twelve ambitious up-and-comers, and each of these practiced warriors has the guts to gain glory.
