VARNER VS. HENDERSON
This lightweight unification bout pairs Varner and Henderson for the first time. Varner heads into his third title defense having defeated Donald Cerrone in January of this year, while Henderson plans to upgrade the interim belt he earned defeating Cerrone in October.
25-year-old Jamie “C-4” Varner began his MMA career in March of 2003 when he defeated Carlos Artega via decision at RITC 46: Launching Pad. His most recent bout headlined WEC 38 on January 25th of this year where he defended his title for the second time and added another decision win to his record by defeating Donald Cerrone. Varner’s 16 wins include five technical knockouts, nine submissions, and two decisions; one submission and one decision make up his 2 losses; and he shares 2 no contests. Varner has attained one title, and defended twice. Born in and fighting out of Arizona, the WEC lightweight champion took up boxing at an early age, participated regularly in high school and college wrestling, currently trains with Arizona Combat Sports, names his family and his training partners and coaches as his heroes, and is fluent in English and rudimentary Spanish.
26-year-old Benson “Smooth” Henderson began his MMA career in November of 2006 when he forced Dan Gregary to submit in the first round at MCF: Genesis. His most recent bout headlined WEC 43 on October 10th of this year where he earned his interim belt by defeating Donald Cerrone via decision. Henderson’s 10 wins include two technical knockouts, six submissions, and two decisions, while a knockout win for Chad Klingensmith gives him his 1 loss. Henderson has attained one title. Born in Colorado and fighting out of Arizona, the interim WEC lightweight champion participated regularly in college wrestling, currently trains with MMA Lab and holds a black belt in taekwondo and a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names Jesus and his mother among others as his heroes, has a double major undergraduate degree in criminal justice and sociology, and is fluent in English and Korean.
Will Varner walk away undisputed and hold onto his title, or will Henderson prove superior and upgrade his own?
FABER VS. ASSUNCAO
Faber and Assuncao meet for the first time in this featherweight bout. Faber returns to his hometown intent on climbing back to the top after a disappointing title rematch in June, while Assuncao seeks a cleaner finish after his first two WEC bouts ended as decisions.
30-year-old Urijah “The California Kid” Faber began his MMA career in November of 2003 when he forced Jay Valencia to submit in the first round at Gladiator Challenge 20. His most recent bout headlined WEC 41 on June 7th of this year where he met Mike Brown for the second time. Unsuccessful in both battles with Brown, Faber lost his belt via technical knockout in the first, and a unanimous decision stopped him from reclaiming it in the second. Faber’s 22 wins include seven technical knockouts, eleven submissions, three decisions, and one disqualification, while two technical knockouts and one decision make up his 3 losses. He has attained four titles, and defended five times. Born in and fighting out of California, Faber participated regularly in high school and college wrestling, currently trains with Team Alpha Male, names his parents as his heroes, and has an undergraduate degree in human development.
27-year-old Raphael Assuncao began his MMA career in January of 2004 when he earned a technical knockout win against Chris Clark at ISCF: Friday Night Fight. Assuncao’s 14 wins include one knockout, one technical knockout, eight submissions, and four decisions, while a decision win for Jeff Curran gives him his 1 loss. Born in Brazil and fighting out of Georgia, USA, Assuncao devoted himself to the sport full-time in 2000, currently trains with Ascension Mixed Martial Arts and holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, enjoyed teaching his craft before turning professional, names God as his hero, and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Will Faber take a big step toward reclaiming his title, or will Assuncao move to 3-0 in his new promotion?
BROWN VS. MORRISON
This featherweight bout sees Brown face Morrison for the first time. Brown is determined to once again dominate the division after losing his title in November, while Morrison looks forward to his WEC debut and hopes to be triumphant.
34-year-old Mike Brown began his MMA career in April of 2001 when he forced Jeff Darienzo into submission at Mass Destruction 1. His most recent bout headlined WEC 44 on November 18th of this year where he lost his belt to Jose Aldo via technical knockout. Brown’s 22 wins include four technical knockouts, twelve submissions, and six decisions, while one technical knockout and four submissions make up his 5 losses. He has attained one title, and defended twice. Born in Maine and fighting out of Florida, Brown participated regularly in high school and college wrestling, entered MMA in 1995, currently trains with American Top Team and holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names his coaches and his friends and family as his heroes, and has an undergraduate degree in biology.
25-year-old Anthony “Cheesesteak” Morrison began his MMA career in June of 2006 when he earned a technical knockout win against Will Loushin at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 1. His most recent bout took place at ROF 36: Demolition on December 4th of this year where he forced Alvin Robinson to submit in round one. Morrison’s 15 wins include one knockout, eight technical knockouts, two submissions, and four decisions, while one knockout, one technical knockout, and five submissions make up his 7 losses. Born in and fighting out of Virginia, Morrison currently trains with Team Combat and is hungry for his first fight in the WEC.
Will Brown recover from his fumble, or will Morrison demonstrate why he’s been signed?
SEMERZIER VS. TAUROSEVICIUS
Semerzier and Taurosevicius are matched up for the first time in this featherweight bout. Undefeated Semerzier has won four out of his five professional fights via submission, while former rugby player Taurosevicius enters his fifteenth pro bout having won eight of eleven via submission.
29-year-old Mackens “Mack da Menace” Semerzier began his MMA career in September of 2008 when he forced Ryan Lamareaux to submit in the third round at Vengeance Fighting Championship 1. His most recent bout took place at WEC 43: Cerrone vs. Henderson on October 10th of this year where he added another submission win to his record by defeating Wagnney Fabiano in round one. Semerzier’s 5 wins include one technical knockout and four submissions. He has no losses thus far. Born in Florida and fighting out of Virginia, Semerzier took up wrestling when he entered martial arts at the age of fifteen, began boxing at nineteen while in the Marine Corps, started to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai at twenty-three, currently trains with and enjoys coaching at Linxx Academy of Martial Arts, names his mother, Rose Semerzier, as his hero, and is fluent in English and Creole.
32-year-old Deividas Taurosevicius began his MMA career in November of 2002 when a decision win for Mike Acosta left him defeated. His most recent bout took place at WEC 43: Cerrone vs. Henderson on October 10th of this year where he defeated Javier Vazquez via decision. Taurosevicius’ 11 wins include eight submissions and three decisions, while his 3 losses have all been decisions. Born in Lithuania and fighting out of New York, USA, Taurosevicius devoted himself to sambo, judo, and kickboxing when he was twenty-one, currently trains with Renzo Gracie Academy and holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names his mother as his hero, has completed an undergraduate degree in business administration, enjoyed international success as a professional rugby player before starting his career in mixed martial arts, and is fluent in English, Lithuanian, and Russian.
Will Semerzier show off his grappling skills, or will Taurosevicius be the one to take it to the ground? Perhaps the submission expertise will keep these two standing and surprise us with an uncharacteristic ending?
JANSEN VS. SHALORUS
This lightweight bout pits Jansen against Shalorus for the first time. Jansen goes into his fifteenth career fight set on remaining undefeated, while Shalorus counts down to his seventh career fight with only one draw staining his otherwise immaculate record.
30-year-old Dave “The Fugitive” Jansen began his MMA career in January of 2007 when he forced Matt Slosser to submit in the second round at SF 18: Turning Point. His most recent bout took place at WEC 43: Cerrone vs. Henderson on October 10th of this year where he defeated Richard Crunkilton via decision. Jansen’s 14 wins include one technical knockout, eight submissions, and five decisions. He has no losses thus far. Born in and fighting out of Oregon, Jansen participated regularly in high school and college wrestling, entered MMA in 2006 and currently trains with Team Quest Portland, names his mom as his hero, and took an interest in both anthropology and political science during his time at university.
37-year-old Kamal “Prince of Persia” Shalorus began his MMA career in April of 2008 when he earned a technical knockout win against Jeff Davis at King of Kombat 3. His most recent bout took place at WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo on November 18th of this year where he added another technical knockout win to his record by defeating Will Kerr. Shalorus’ 5 wins include four technical knockouts and one submission, and he shares 1 draw with Mikel Bronzoulis. Shalorus has no losses thus far. Born in Iran and fighting out of Texas, USA, Shalorus took up wrestling at an early age, entered MMA in 2004 and currently trains with American Combat Association, has completed a professional education in construction, and is fluent in English, Arabic, and Farsi.
Unless a draw leaves things undecided, one of these two fighters will be forced to face his first career loss. Will it be Jansen, or will it be Shalorus?
